Researcher

Angelina Wang

Angelina Wang is a responsible AI researcher whose work examines fairness, social bias, and evaluation. She coauthored studies of racial bias in image captions at ICCV 2021 and methods for measuring representational harms at FAccT 2022. Her ICCV 2023 oral showed how carefully curated fine-tuning data can reduce bias inherited from pretrained models; by 2024, she held a computer science PhD from Princeton. She coauthored an ACL 2025 Best Paper on when language models should account for group differences, joined the Center for Democracy & Technology’s 2026 Non-Resident Fellows cohort, and contributed to Cornell Tech’s Mastercard collaboration on generative AI evaluation. She is an assistant professor of information science at Cornell Tech and Cornell Bowers, and a field faculty member in computer science and data science at Cornell; she joined Cornell Tech in July 2025 after a Stanford postdoctoral appointment.

Timeline

  1. 2021

    Racial bias in image captions

At ICCV 2021, she coauthors “Understanding and Evaluating Racial Biases in Image Captioning” with Dora Zhao and Olga Russakovsky. The study reports differences in caption performance, sentiment, and word choice between images depicting lighter- and darker-skinned people.

  2. 2022

    Measuring captioning harms

At FAccT 2022, she coauthors “Measuring Representational Harms in Image Captioning.” The paper lays out methods for operationalizing potential harms and measures harms in an automated captioning model on two popular datasets.

  3. 2023

    A Princeton PhD student

At EECS Rising Stars 2023, she is a PhD student at Princeton University advised by Olga Russakovsky. She has a B.S. in electrical engineering and computer science from UC Berkeley.

  4. 2023

    Overwriting pretrained bias

Her ICCV 2023 oral paper, “Overwriting Pretrained Bias with Finetuning Data,” finds that careful curation of fine-tuning data can reduce bias inherited from pretrained models.

  5. 2025

    An ACL Best Paper

She coauthors “Fairness through Difference Awareness: Measuring Desired Group Discrimination in LLMs” with Michelle Phan, Daniel E. Ho, and Sanmi Koyejo. Its benchmark tests eight scenarios for when language models should account for group differences, and ACL names it a Best Paper.

  6. 2026

    A CDT fellowship

The Center for Democracy & Technology names her to its 2026 cohort of Non-Resident Fellows.

  7. March 2026

    Auditing generative AI

In March 2026, Cornell Tech launches a collaboration with Mastercard to develop methods for evaluating and auditing generative AI systems, and she is part of its research team. The project focuses on realistic evaluations and audit frameworks that detect outcome variance across the AI pipeline.

  8. July 2025–October 2026

    Cornell Tech assistant professor

By 2024, she holds a computer science PhD from Princeton University. Cornell Tech appoints her assistant professor of information science effective July 2025 after a postdoctoral appointment at Stanford. As of October 2026, she is an assistant professor at Cornell Tech and Cornell Bowers, and a field faculty member in computer science and data science at Cornell; her research focuses on machine-learning fairness and algorithmic bias.
