Sanmi Koyejo
Also known as Oluwasanmi Koyejo
Sanmi Koyejo is a computer scientist whose work evaluates AI trustworthiness and applies machine learning in healthcare. He completed an electrical-engineering PhD at the University of Texas at Austin, pursued postdoctoral research at Stanford, and joined Illinois in 2016. At Illinois, he worked with clinicians on AI for COVID-19 X-rays and privacy-preserving learning across hospitals; at Stanford, he leads STAIR and has served as Black in AI president since 2021. In 2023, NeurIPS named Are Emergent Abilities of Large Language Models a Mirage? an Outstanding Paper runner-up and gave an Outstanding Paper Award to DecodingTrust, two papers he coauthored. He received the 2025 PECASE and appeared on TIME100 AI in 2026, joined Meta with Virtue AI’s team in June 2026, and as of October 2026 teaches AI Measurement Science at Stanford.

Timeline
-
2013–2016
PhD and Stanford postdoc
He completes a 2013 PhD in electrical engineering at the University of Texas at Austin, undertakes postdoctoral research at Stanford on machine-learning methods for neuroimaging, and joins Illinois Computer Science in fall 2016 to study statistical machine learning and large-scale data problems.
-
2021
COVID-19 from X-rays
In 2021, he works with Illinois computer-science colleagues and clinicians to use AI on X-rays and predict COVID-19 severity. He develops privacy-preserving federated-learning methods across hospitals for health research.
-
Since 2021
Leading Black in AI and STAIR
Since 2021, he serves as president of Black in AI. At Stanford, he leads the Stanford Trustworthy AI Research (STAIR) group on AI evaluation, privacy, robustness, and fairness.
-
2023
NeurIPS papers on evaluation
In 2023, he coauthors Are Emergent Abilities of Large Language Models a Mirage?, which argues that metric choices can make claimed language-model abilities appear abrupt. NeurIPS names it an Outstanding Paper runner-up; DecodingTrust, another paper he coauthors, wins an Outstanding Paper Award.
-
2025
A Presidential Early Career Award
In 2025, he receives the Presidential Early Career Award for Scientists and Engineers (PECASE) for research at the frontiers of science and technology.
-
2026
A TIME100 AI selection
In 2026, he appears on TIME100 AI.
-
June–October 2026
Joining Meta Superintelligence Labs
He joins Meta Superintelligence Labs with Virtue AI cofounders Bo Li and Dawn Song in June 2026. In October 2026, Meta says it is letting go of employees it hired from Virtue AI.
-
As of October 2026
Professor at Stanford
As of October 2026, he is a computer-science professor at Stanford and teaches AI Measurement Science in the 2026–27 academic year.
