Angelica Aviles-Rivero
Also known as Angelica I Aviles-Rivero
Angelica Aviles-Rivero is a machine-learning researcher whose work spans inverse imaging, graph learning, and medical image analysis. After earning a PhD at UPC–BarcelonaTech in 2017, she held research posts at Cambridge through 2024. She published semi-supervised models for chest X-rays and Alzheimer’s classification, and coauthored an inverse-imaging paper that won an ICML 2020 Outstanding Paper Award. At Tsinghua, she is an assistant professor at the Yau Mathematical Sciences Center and leads the Math+ML+X Lab.

Timeline
-
2017
A PhD and a Cambridge post
In 2017, she earns a PhD at UPC–BarcelonaTech in Spain under advisor A. Casals. At Cambridge, she joins the Department of Pure and Mathematical Statistics as a Research Associate in 2017.
-
2019
Graph learning for chest X-rays
In 2019, she coauthors GraphXNET, a graph-based semi-supervised method for classifying chest X-rays with very few labeled examples.
-
2020
An ICML Outstanding Paper
Tuning-free Plug-and-Play Proximal Algorithm for Inverse Imaging Problems wins an ICML 2020 Outstanding Paper Award. She coauthors the paper with Kaixuan Wei, Jingwei Liang, Ying Fu, Carola-Bibiane Schönlieb, and Hua Huang.
-
2020
Graph diffusion for COVID-19
In 2020, she coauthors GraphXCOVID, a deep semi-supervised framework for classifying COVID-19 in chest X-rays. It diffuses labels from a small labeled set to provide pseudo-labels for a deep network.
-
2022
A hypergraph for Alzheimer diagnosis
In 2022, she coauthors a semi-supervised hypergraph framework for Alzheimer’s diagnosis that combines multimodal imaging and non-imaging data while requiring a tiny labeled set.
-
2022–2024
Senior Research Associate at Cambridge
She becomes a Senior Research Associate in Cambridge’s Department of Applied Mathematics and Theoretical Physics in 2022 and holds the role through 2024. Her Cambridge affiliations include CMIH, the Cantab Capital Institute for the Mathematics of Information, the Statistical Laboratory, and the Cambridge Image Analysis Group.
-
2022
Secretary of SIAM SIAG/IS
In 2022, she begins a term as Secretary of SIAM’s SIAG/IS.
-
Since 2024
Assistant professor at Tsinghua
At Tsinghua, she is an assistant professor at the Yau Mathematical Sciences Center, a post she takes in 2024. The Math+ML+X Lab works at the intersection of mathematics, machine learning, and real-world applications.
