Andrés Bruhn
Also known as A. Bruhn
Andrés Bruhn is a computer-vision researcher whose work centers on optical flow. Born in Santiago de Chile in 1976, he studied computer engineering at the University of Mannheim and completed a computer-science doctorate at Saarland University in 2006. At Saarland, he built an independent Vision and Image Processing group from 2010 and became a professor at Stuttgart in March 2012. His work includes an optical-flow method that received the Koenderink Prize in 2014, the Spring benchmark in 2023, and RobustSpring, launched in 2025. As of October 2026, he is Chair for Intelligent Systems at Stuttgart and heads its Computer Vision group.

Timeline
-
1976–2006
Early life and education
Born in Santiago de Chile in 1976, he studies computer engineering at the University of Mannheim and earns a computer-science doctorate at Saarland University in 2006.
-
2004
A theory for optical flow
In 2004, he and Thomas Brox, Nils Papenberg, and Joachim Weickert present an optical-flow model that combines brightness constancy, gradient constancy, and discontinuity-preserving smoothness. The method gives coarse-to-fine warping a theoretical basis and achieves lower angular errors than earlier techniques.
-
2006–2012
Research at Saarland
He works as a postdoctoral researcher in 2006–2007 and as an assistant professor at Saarland’s Mathematical Image Analysis Group in 2007–2012. From 2010 to 2012, he builds the independent Vision and Image Processing group within the MMCI Cluster of Excellence.
-
March 2012
Professor at Stuttgart
He becomes a professor of computer science at the University of Stuttgart in March 2012 and leads its Intelligent Systems department at VIS.
-
2014
A Koenderink Prize
At ECCV in 2014, he receives the Koenderink Prize for an optical-flow method he develops with Thomas Brox, Nils Papenberg, and Joachim Weickert.
-
2023
The Spring benchmark
In 2023, he coauthors Spring, a high-resolution, high-detail, computer-generated benchmark for scene flow, optical flow, and stereo.
-
2025–2026
RobustSpring and conference service
The team launches RobustSpring in 2025 as an image-corruption benchmark for optical flow, scene flow, and stereo, then presents its paper at ICLR in 2026. In 2025, he receives an ICCV Outstanding Reviewer Award; in 2026, he receives a CVPR Outstanding Area Chair Award and serves as program chair for GCPR.
-
As of October 2026
Leading the Computer Vision group
He is a full professor of computer science and the Chair for Intelligent Systems at the University of Stuttgart, where he heads the Computer Vision group at VIS.
