Researcher

Joachim Weickert

As of October 2026, Joachim Weickert is a professor at Saarland University, where he works on image processing and computer vision. His 1996 doctorate at Kaiserslautern dealt with anisotropic diffusion in image processing, and the Olympus Prize honored his work on nonlinear anisotropic diffusion filtering in 1998. He became a full professor at Saarland University in 2001 and leads its Mathematical Image Analysis group. His optical-flow paper with Thomas Brox, Andres Bruhn and Nils Papenberg won the ECCV 2004 best paper award and received the Koenderink Prize in 2014. He received the Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz Prize in 2010, and in 2017 an ERC Advanced Grant funded INCOVID, his project on inpainting-based compression.
