Andreas Maier
Andreas Maier is a professor whose AI research connects speech assessment, medical imaging and clinical diagnostics. At Erlangen, he develops PEAKS for speech intelligibility, then works on C-arm CT at Stanford and reconstruction at Siemens Healthcare. After returning to FAU, he leads the Medical Reconstruction Group and Pattern Recognition Lab, and contributes machine-learning methods to the 2018 4D+ nanoSCOPE X-ray project. In May 2025, his Next-generation AI for Integrated Diagnostics project receives €125,500 from the STAEDTLER Foundation; in October 2025, he presents its results at FAU, and in 2026 he coauthors a vision-language model for CT image quality. He is a professor and head of FAU's Pattern Recognition Lab.
Timeline
-
2005–2009
PEAKS for speech assessment
Born in Erlangen in 1980, he studies computer science and graduates in 2005, then receives a PhD in 2009. At the Pattern Recognition Lab, he researches medical speech processing and develops PEAKS, an online tool for assessing speech intelligibility.
-
2009–2010
Stanford C-arm CT postdoc
From 2009 to 2010, he works as a postdoctoral fellow on flat-panel C-arm CT at Stanford University's Radiological Sciences Laboratory in the Department of Radiology.
-
2011–2012
Siemens Healthcare innovation manager
From 2011 to 2012, he works as an innovation project manager at Siemens Healthcare, responsible for reconstruction topics in its Angiography and X-ray business unit.
-
2012–2015
Leading FAU's Medical Reconstruction Group
In 2012, he returns to the University of Erlangen-Nuremberg as head of the Medical Reconstruction Group at the Pattern Recognition Lab. In 2015, he becomes a professor and head of the Pattern Recognition Lab.
-
2018
4D+ nanoSCOPE and precision learning
In 2018, he joins Georg Schett and Silke Christiansen as recipients of an ERC Synergy Grant for 4D+ nanoSCOPE, which plans X-ray microscopy studies of living organisms with Precision Learning methods for data evaluation. He contributes machine-learning methods for automated and statistically validated interpretation of measurement data.
-
May–October 2025
AI for integrated diagnostics
In May 2025, his Next-generation AI for Integrated Diagnostics project receives €125,500 from the STAEDTLER Foundation. Led by Maier, the initiative combines AI with imaging and sensing to support earlier detection and individualized treatment of chronic diseases. In October 2025, he presents its results at FAU.
-
2026
An explainable vision-language model
In 2026, he coauthors the conference paper “Explainable Radiologist-aligned VLM for CT Image Quality Assessment,” which fine-tunes MedGemma-4B-IT to score CT image quality and generate textual explanations.
-
As of October 2026
Professor and head at FAU
In October 2025, he holds FAU's Pattern Recognition chair. As of October 2026, he is a professor and head of the Pattern Recognition Lab.
