Andreas Stolcke
Andreas Stolcke is a speech and language researcher whose work spans statistical language modeling, speech recognition, and speaker recognition. He completed a UC Berkeley PhD in 1994 and designed SRILM, an open-source statistical language modeling toolkit described in his 2002 paper. He became an IEEE Fellow in 2011 and an ISCA Fellow in 2013. At Microsoft, he presented a 2017 review of conversational speech recognition that benchmarked recognition technology against human transcription. As of October 2026, he is a Distinguished AI Scientist and vice president of AI at Uniphore and a Non-Resident Fellow at ICSI.

Timeline
-
1994
A Berkeley doctorate
He completes a UC Berkeley EECS PhD in 1994 with a thesis titled "Bayesian Learning of Probabilistic Language Models."
-
2002
The SRILM language toolkit
He designs SRILM and publishes a paper on it at ICSLP in 2002. The toolkit uses C++ libraries, programs, and scripts to build and evaluate statistical language models for speech recognition and related tasks.
-
2011
An IEEE Fellowship
At SRI, he is a senior researcher when he becomes an IEEE Fellow in 2011. The fellowship cites his contributions to statistical language modeling, automatic speech recognition, and automatic speaker recognition.
-
2013
An ISCA Fellowship
He becomes an ISCA Fellow in 2013.
-
July 2017
Conversational speech recognition
At Microsoft, he presents a review of conversational speech recognition and a 2017 Microsoft experiment that benchmarks recognition technology against human transcription.
-
2022
An IEEE industry speaker role
In 2022, he serves as an IEEE Distinguished Industry Speaker for the IEEE Signal Processing Society.
-
As of October 2026
Applied science at Uniphore
As of October 2026, he is a Distinguished AI Scientist and vice president of AI at Uniphore and a non-resident fellow at ICSI. His earlier roles include research or scientist positions at SRI International, Microsoft, and Amazon. At Uniphore, he directs and advises applied science work on text- and speech-based AI applications.
