Anand Asundi
Also known as Anand Krishna Asundi
Anand Asundi is an optical metrology researcher whose career connects deep learning with phase imaging and industrial 3D vision. He earned civil and aeronautical engineering degrees at IIT Bombay, completed a doctorate at Stony Brook, held a research fellowship at Virginia Tech, and served as a mechanical engineering professor at the University of Hong Kong from 1983 to 1996. In 2013, he directed NTU's Centre for Optical and Laser Engineering and described a patented lens-less 3D microscope. He co-founded d’Optron in 2015, coauthored a deep-learning study in 2019, co-organized an industrial optics session in 2023, and received SPIE's 2024 optical metrology award. In July 2025, he was scheduled to speak about AI-driven 3D vision, and he serves on the AOP 2026 Scientific Committee with dOptron Pte Ltd in Singapore as his affiliation.
Timeline
-
1983–1996
HKU mechanical engineering professor
He earns a B.Tech. in civil engineering and an M.Tech. in aeronautical engineering at IIT Bombay, then a Ph.D. at Stony Brook and a research fellowship at Virginia Tech. From 1983 to 1996, he serves as a professor in the University of Hong Kong's Department of Mechanical Engineering.
-
April 2013
Directing NTU's optics centre
In April 2013, NTU opens its Centre for Optical and Laser Engineering with Asundi as director. He describes a patented lens-less 3D microscope that lets users take a photo and refocus on details later.
-
2015
Co-founding d'Optron
In 2015, he co-founds d’Optron Pte Ltd with Rachel Wang to provide real-time 3D imaging solutions across multiple sectors.
-
2019
Deep learning phase unwrapping
He coauthors a 2019 study that trains deep neural networks to perform temporal phase unwrapping. The study reports improved reliability under intensity noise, low fringe modulation, and projector nonlinearity.
-
2023
Industrial optics at icOPEN
In 2023, he co-organizes icOPEN's Optical Engineering in Industry special session alongside Xiang Peng, with d’Optron Pte Ltd as his affiliation.
-
2024
SPIE optical metrology award
He receives the 2024 SPIE Chandra S. Vikram Award in Optical Metrology for contributions to coherent optical metrology and sensing, with special attention to digital technologies.
-
July 2025
AI cameras for industry
In July 2025, he is scheduled to give a Photonics Lecture Series talk titled “The Future of Industrial Imaging 3D + AI based Cameras” on AI-driven 3D vision for robotics, drones, and logistics.
-
As of October 2026
AOP 2026 scientific committee
As of October 2026, he serves on the Scientific Committee for AOP 2026, with dOptron Pte Ltd in Singapore as his affiliation.
