Ponnuthurai Nagaratnam Suganthan
Also known as Nagaratnam Suganthan, P N Suganthan, P. N. Suganthan, P. N Suganthan, P. N. SUGANTHAN
Ponnuthurai Nagaratnam Suganthan is a research professor whose work includes evolutionary optimization and neural networks. He finished school at Union College in Tellippalai, earned Cambridge degrees in electrical and information engineering in 1990, 1992 and 1994, then worked in Sydney and Queensland before joining NTU in 1999. He coauthored a differential evolution paper with Qin and Huang in 2009; the SaDE paper won the IEEE Transactions on Evolutionary Computation Outstanding Paper Award in 2012. IEEE named him a Fellow in 2015, and the University of Maribor awarded him an honorary doctorate in 2020. He is a research professor at Qatar University's KINDI Center; he joined in August 2022 and gave a lecture on deep neural networks in July 2026.

Schooling and Cambridge degrees
He finishes school at Union College in Tellippalai and earns a B.A. in 1990, a postgraduate certificate in 1992 and an M.A. in 1994 in electrical and information engineering at the University of Cambridge.

1995–1999
Research posts and an NTU move
He works as a pre-doctoral research assistant at the University of Sydney in 1995–1996 and as a lecturer at the University of Queensland in 1996–1999, then moves to NTU in 1999.

2009
Differential evolution with adaptation
With A. K. Qin and V. L. Huang, he publishes “Differential Evolution Algorithm With Strategy Adaptation for Global Numerical Optimization” in 2009.

2012
An IEEE paper award
His co-authored SaDE paper wins the IEEE Transactions on Evolutionary Computation Outstanding Paper Award in 2012.

IEEE Fellow
He becomes an IEEE Fellow in 2015.

January 2020
An honorary doctorate
In January 2020, he receives an honorary doctorate from the University of Maribor and presents “Randomization-Based Deep and Shallow Neural Networks” at UM FERI.

August 2022–October 2026
Research professor at Qatar University
He joins the KINDI Center for Computing Research at Qatar University as a research professor in August 2022. In July 2026, he gives a Hohai University lecture on “Deep Neural Networks Trained by Closed-form/BP with Multiple Output Layers/Heads.” As of October 2026, he is a research professor at the center.
