Timeline

1. 1985–1989

   Degrees at Oklahoma State and Purdue

   He earns a BS in electrical engineering from Oklahoma State University in 1985, then an MS in 1986 and a PhD in 1989 in electrical engineering at Purdue University.

2. 1990–2007

   Professor and head of department

   In 1990, he starts as a lecturer at the Signal Processing Laboratory of Tampere University of Technology and becomes an associate professor there in 1994. He takes a professorship in Pori in 1995 and moves to the main campus as a full professor in 1998. From 2002 to 2007, he heads the Department of Signal Processing.

3. 2011–2015

   Academy of Finland Professor

   He is an Academy of Finland Professor at Tampere University of Technology from 2011 to 2015, and he becomes an IEEE Fellow in 2011. In 2014, he joins the Informatics section of Academia Europaea and the Finnish Academy of Science and Letters.

4. 2016–2019

   ECG classification with 1-D CNNs

   In March 2016, he co-authors 'Real-Time Patient-Specific ECG Classification by 1-D Convolutional Neural Networks'. The paper receives the 1st Prize in the Most Impactful Paper Award from IEEE Engineering in Medicine and Biology in 2019.

5. 2019–2020

   Operational neural networks

   In February 2019, he co-authors 'Operational Neural Networks' with Serkan Kiranyaz, Turker Ince and Alexandros Iosifidis, which proposes networks whose neurons can use any set of operators. In May 2019, he co-authors a survey of 1D convolutional neural networks with Kiranyaz, Onur Avci, Osama Abdeljaber, Ince and Daniel J. Inman. In April 2020, he co-authors Self-organized Operational Neural Networks, whose generative neurons adapt the nodal operator of each connection during training.

6. 2023–2024

   Honorary professor and ICIP co-chair

   China University of Petroleum (East China) confers an honorary professorship on him in June 2023, and he gives an academic report titled 'Green Learning'. In 2024, he becomes a Fellow of the Industry Academy of the International Artificial Intelligence Industry Alliance, and in October 2024 he is General Co-Chair of the IEEE International Conference on Image Processing in Abu Dhabi.

7. As of October 2026

   Professor at Tampere University

   He is a professor of information technology at the Department of Computing Sciences at Tampere University in Finland. He directs the Signal Analysis and Machine Intelligence (SAMI) research group, which develops machine learning, pattern recognition and signal processing algorithms for different applications.
