Researcher

Jia Deng

Also known as Jia Hao Deng

Jia Deng is a computer vision researcher and Princeton professor. He coauthored ImageNet, a WordNet-organized image database for object recognition. His research on human-readable object categories won the ICCV Marr Prize, and he received the PAMI Mark Everingham Prize in 2016. ImageNet later received the PAMI Longuet-Higgins Prize, and his RAFT paper won ECCV’s 2020 Best Paper Award for optical flow. As of October 2026, he is a Princeton professor on leave and leads active projects on image foundation models and procedural 3D data.

Timeline

  1. 2009

    Building a visual database

With Wei Dong, Richard Socher, Li-Jia Li, Kai Li, and Li Fei-Fei, he coauthored the 2009 paper that introduced ImageNet, a WordNet-organized image dataset for object-recognition research.

  2. 2012

    A computer science education

He earned a Ph.D. in computer science from Princeton University in 2012, after earning a B.Eng. in computer science from Tsinghua University.

  3. 2013

    Naming objects for people

With Vicente Ordonez, Yejin Choi, Alexander C. Berg, and Tamara L. Berg, he studied how systems could map detailed image categories to object labels people use. Their paper won the ICCV Marr Prize.

  4. 2016

    A community prize

He received the PAMI Mark Everingham Prize in 2016.

  5. 2018

    Returning to Princeton

By 2018, he was an assistant professor of computer science at Princeton, after serving as an assistant professor at the University of Michigan.

  6. 2019

    ImageNet’s lasting impact

The 2009 ImageNet paper received the PAMI Longuet-Higgins Prize in 2019 as the retrospective most impactful paper from CVPR 2009.

  7. 2020

    Following motion in video

With Zachary Teed, he coauthored RAFT, a deep network for optical-flow estimation that updates pixel motion through recurrent lookups on all-pairs correlations. The ECCV 2020 paper won the conference’s Best Paper Award.

  8. As of October 2026

    A current research program

As of October 2026, he is a Professor of Computer Science at Princeton and is on leave. He leads active NSF projects on foundation models for rock-cross-section images and procedural generation of photorealistic 3D data.
