Researcher

Wally Feurzeig

Also known as Wallace Feurzeig

Wally Feurzeig was an AI researcher who explored how computers could support learning. At BBN, he developed MENTOR, organized its Educational Technology Department, and helped create Logo for children with Seymour Papert and Cynthia Solomon. He later presented Function Machines, coauthored Exploring Language With Logo, and served as a Principal Scientist in Educational Technologies at BBN. His article “Educational Technology at BBN” appeared in IEEE Annals in 2006, and he died in 2013.

Timeline

  1. 1927–1962

    Chicago and BBN's AI department

He is born in Chicago in 1927 and earns a PhB and BS at the University of Chicago and an MS at the Illinois Institute of Technology. He works at Argonne National Laboratory and the University of Chicago before joining BBN's Artificial Intelligence Department in 1962, one of the earliest AI organizations.

  2. 1962–1965

    MENTOR and BBN's education department

At BBN, he develops MENTOR, an intelligent computer-aided instruction system that uses production rules to support medical diagnosis and other decision-making. In 1965, he organizes BBN's Educational Technology Department to improve learning and teaching. A Socratic System transcript shows a student leading a medical diagnosis and receiving history-sensitive replies, an advance over CAI systems in 1962.

  3. 1966–1969

    Logo for children

He develops Logo with Seymour Papert and Cynthia Solomon at BBN from 1966 to 1969, a programming language designed for children. In 1967, a working version runs in Lisp on a time-shared SDS 940.

  4. 1987

    Exploring Language With Logo

He and Paul Goldenberg publish Exploring Language With Logo in 1987, a book that explores the structure, function, and history of language using computer tools.

  5. October 1996

    Principal Scientist at BBN

In October 1996, he serves as a Principal Scientist in Educational Technologies at BBN Systems and Technology Corporation.

  6. 1997

    Function Machines at EuroLogo

At EuroLogo in 1997, he describes Function Machines in a talk titled “Programming in Two Dimensions.” The talk presents it as a visual programming language for helping students develop mathematical thinking.

  7. 2006

    An IEEE history of BBN

His article “Educational Technology at BBN” appears in the January–March 2006 issue of IEEE Annals of the History of Computing.

  8. 2013

    Death in 2013

He dies in 2013 after spending most of his career on computer applications for education and training.
