Researcher

Vlado Keselj

Vlado Keselj is a Dalhousie computer science professor whose AI work links natural language processing, authorship attribution and large language model reasoning. As a high school student in Yugoslavia, he won a bronze medal at the 1987 International Mathematical Olympiad, then earned degrees at the University of Belgrade and the University of Waterloo. His 2003 paper with Fuchun Peng, Nick Cercone and Calvin Thomas presented n-gram author profiles for authorship attribution. Keselj served as program co-chair of the Canadian AI conference in 2010, received CAIAC's Distinguished Service Award in 2019 and launched Dalhousie's Master of Digital Innovation program in September 2020. In 2026, he coauthored a study of token log-probability instability in large language model reasoning; as of October 2026, he is a professor and MDI Program Director at Dalhousie and teaches Natural Language Processing.

Timeline

  1. 1987

    An Olympiad bronze medal

As a high school student in Yugoslavia, he wins a bronze medal at the International Mathematical Olympiad in 1987.

  2. 1994–2002

    Three computer science degrees

He earns a BSc at the University of Belgrade in 1994, an MMath at the University of Waterloo in 1997, and a PhD there in 2002.

  3. 2003

    N-gram author profiles

In 2003, he coauthors “N-gram-based Author Profiles for Authorship Attribution” with Fuchun Peng, Nick Cercone and Calvin Thomas. The paper presents Common N-gram Analysis (CNG), a method for character n-gram authorship attribution.

  4. 2010

    Canadian AI conference co-chair

He serves as program co-chair of the Canadian AI conference in 2010.

  5. 2019

    CAIAC Distinguished Service Award

He receives the CAIAC Distinguished Service Award in 2019.

  6. September 2020

    Launching the MDI program

He launches Dalhousie's Master of Digital Innovation program in September 2020.

  7. 2026

    Detecting LLM reasoning failures

In 2026, he coauthors a study on token log probabilities as an instability signal for large language model reasoning. The study reports that the signal predicts wrong answers on GSM8K and HotpotQA.

  8. As of October 2026

    Professor and MDI director

As of October 2026, he is Professor of Computer Science at Dalhousie University and MDI Program Director. In Fall 2026, he teaches Natural Language Processing.
