Veronica Dahl
Also known as Verónica Dahl
Veronica Dahl is a computer scientist and Simon Fraser University professor emerita who helped found logic programming and applied it to human languages. She earned a doctorate in artificial intelligence at Aix-Marseille II in 1977 under Alain Colmerauer, and her thesis work produced the first logic-programmed database system, with a front end in Spanish. In 1989 she coauthored the book Logic Grammars with Abramson, and in 1997 the Association for Logic Programming named her one of its 15 Founders of Logic Programming. She presided over that association from 2001 to 2005 and held a Marie Curie Chair of Excellence in Tarragona from 2008 to 2011. Since 2022, she chairs the Prolog Education Group 2.0, an international effort to bring logical reasoning and trustworthy coding skills into school curricula.

Timeline
-
1974–1977
A Spanish-language Prolog database
She graduates in computer science from Buenos Aires University in 1974 and continues graduate study in France. In 1977, she earns a doctorate in artificial intelligence at Aix-Marseille II under Alain Colmerauer, and her thesis work yields the first logic-programmed database system, with a Spanish-language front end to consult it.
-
1982–1991
Professor at Simon Fraser
She becomes an associate professor at Simon Fraser University in 1982, wins a record-breaking research contract with IBM, directs the university's Logic and Functional Programming Laboratory from 1986, and becomes a full professor in 1991.
-
1989
The book Logic Grammars
She coauthors the Springer monograph Logic Grammars with Abramson in 1989. Her logic grammar research is extensively used to help find the human genome, which convinces her to cast life-science problems in linguistic terms.
-
1997–2005
Founder of logic programming, then president
In 1997, the Association for Logic Programming names her one of fifteen Founders of Logic Programming, a group that includes Alain Colmerauer and Robert Kowalski. She serves as the association's president from 2001 to 2005.
-
2008–2011
A Marie Curie Chair
The European Commission awards her a Marie Curie Chair of Excellence, held at the University of Tarragona in Spain from 2008 to 2011, for her work on constraint solving and language processing for bioinformatics.
-
2012–2013
Emeritus status and Womb Grammars
She leaves her full professorship at Simon Fraser in 2012 to focus on research, and the university grants her Lifetime Professor Emeritus status from 2013. Her work continues under NSERC funding, including Womb Grammars, which map a known grammar into the grammar of another language from sample sentences and a lexicon and have been applied to Yoruba noun phrases.
-
Since 2022
Chairing Prolog Education Group 2.0
She chairs the Prolog Education Group 2.0, an international effort to introduce reliable thinking skills as a subject in school curricula at all levels. In 2022, she also chairs the Education Committee of the Year of Prolog and is one of eleven authors of Fifty Years of Prolog and Beyond.
-
September 2025
Invited talk at PEG 2025
In September 2025, she gives the invited talk "PEG 2.0: Future-gazing through a socio-linguistic and historical lens" at the third Prolog Education Workshop, held with ICLP 2025 in Rende, Italy.
