Ulle Endriss
Ulle Endriss is a professor of artificial intelligence and collective decision-making at the University of Amsterdam, where he leads the Computational Social Choice Group. His research applies formal methods in AI to multiagent systems and knowledge representation. With Christian Geist, he developed an AI method for finding impossibility theorems in social choice, and their paper won the 2016 IJCAI-JAIR Best Paper Prize. He co-edited the Handbook of Computational Social Choice in 2016, became a EurAI Fellow in 2023, and coauthored a paper on collective decision-making in the LLM era in September 2026.
Timeline
-
1992–2003
Computer science and a PhD
Computer science takes him to Karlsruhe, London and Berlin from 1992 to 1998. At King's College London, he works as a PhD student and research associate from 1998 to 2002, and completes a doctorate in 2003 with a thesis on modal logics of ordered trees under Dov Gabbay.
-
2002–2005
Logic and multiagent systems
From 2002 to 2005, he works at Imperial College London, first as a research associate and then as a research fellow on the European Commission-funded SOCS project in computational logic and multiagent systems.
-
Since 2005
Leading the COMSOC group
He joins the Institute for Logic, Language and Computation (ILLC) at the University of Amsterdam in 2005 and leads its Computational Social Choice Group from July 2005. The group studies computational social choice, multiagent systems, knowledge representation and AI.
-
2011
Searching for social choice impossibilities
With Christian Geist, he publishes a 2011 JAIR paper that applies AI techniques to discover impossibility theorems in social choice. Their method finds 84 impossibility theorems from a set of 20 economic axioms.
-
2016
An IJCAI-JAIR paper prize
He and Christian Geist receive the 2016 IJCAI-JAIR Best Paper Prize for their 2011 paper on automated search for impossibility theorems.
-
2016
The computational social choice handbook
In 2016, he co-edits the Handbook of Computational Social Choice with Felix Brandt, Vincent Conitzer, Jérôme Lang and Ariel D. Procaccia, and writes its chapter on judgment aggregation.
-
2023
A EurAI fellowship
He becomes a EurAI Fellow in 2023.
-
As of October 2026
Professor and LLM-era collective choice
He is professor of Artificial Intelligence and Collective Decision Making at the ILLC, University of Amsterdam, and leads the Computational Social Choice Group. His research uses formal methods in AI to study multiagent systems, knowledge representation and computational social choice. In September 2026, he coauthors Social Choice with Text: Collective Decision Making in the LLM Era, published in the proceedings of the ACM AI Leadership Summit.
