Toshiyuki Sakai
Toshiyuki Sakai was an information processing scientist whose career connected early computers with pattern recognition. He earned an electrical engineering degree at Kyoto University in 1947 and led development of its KDC-1 computer. At Kyoto, he directed information-science labs, where Takeo Kanade studied computer processing and recognition of images and sound. Sakai developed a network for department terminals, built an integrated media system, and became dean at Ryukoku University. He received the C&C Prize in 1992 and an IAPR Fellowship in 1994, was named a Person of Cultural Merits in 1996, and died in 2017.
