Thomas Lukasiewicz
Thomas Lukasiewicz is an artificial intelligence researcher whose work connects large web data and reasoning with explainable and neurosymbolic AI. He earned a computer science master's at Clausthal in 1993 and a PhD at Augsburg in 1996, then held academic posts and fellowships in Germany, Austria, and Rome before joining Oxford as a professor in 2010. During his Oxford tenure, he became a Turing Fellow at The Alan Turing Institute in 2016 and led a project on interpretable deep learning. He received Oxford's first AXA Chair in Explainable AI for Healthcare in 2019 and became a EurAI Fellow in 2020; in 2023, he coauthored a study of ChatGPT's mathematical capabilities. Since April 2022, he is Professor and Head of TU Wien's Artificial Intelligence Techniques research unit, where he works on safe and explainable AI and predictive coding.

2016
Turing fellowship
In 2016, he becomes a Turing Fellow at The Alan Turing Institute in London.
-
2018–2020
Interpretable deep learning
He leads Oxford's 2018–2020 Interpretable and Explainable Deep Learning for Natural Language Understanding and Commonsense Reasoning project as principal investigator; it integrates deep learning with large-scale logic reasoning for interpretable language understanding and commonsense reasoning.
-
2019–2020
The AXA Chair and EurAI
In 2019, he takes up Oxford's first AXA Chair in Explainable Artificial Intelligence for Healthcare, which focuses on neural-symbolic systems for diagnosis and treatment. In 2020, he becomes a EurAI Fellow.
-
Since April 2022
Professor at TU Wien
In 2023, he coauthors Mathematical Capabilities of ChatGPT, a study of ChatGPT's mathematical capabilities. His research focuses on explainable AI, deep learning with logical constraints for safe AI, predictive coding, and active inference. He is Professor and Head of the Artificial Intelligence Techniques research unit at TU Wien, a role he has held since April 2022.
