Sugato Bagchi
Sugato Bagchi is an AI researcher whose career spans planning, simulation, question answering, knowledge graphs, and healthcare AI. He completed a PhD at Vanderbilt in 1995 and coauthored IBM studies of supply chains and semiconductor production. He was part of the IBM Watson team that received the 2013 AAAI Feigenbaum Prize, and he coauthored Watson papers on health care in 2013 and 2017. His 2021–2023 papers addressed open knowledge graphs, table understanding, and links between tables and new ontologies. As of October 2026, he is director of artificial intelligence at Vizlitics; an October 2026 study he coauthored reports 95% agreement between its AI care-state assignments and clinician-assigned states.
Timeline
-
1995
PhD under Kazuhiko Kawamura
He completes a PhD at Vanderbilt University in 1995 under advisor Kazuhiko Kawamura. His dissertation is titled "Planning under Uncertainty by Spreading Activation through an Adaptive Probabilistic Network".
-
2000
IBM's Asset Management Tool
In 2000, he coauthors an Interfaces paper with Grace Lin, Markus Ettl, Steve Buckley, and others on IBM's Asset Management Tool. IBM begins reengineering its global supply chain in 1994, and the tool saves over $750 million in material costs and price-protection expenses in 1998.
-
2010
Analytics for semiconductor fabs
In 2010, he coauthors "Data analytics and stochastic modeling in a semiconductor fab" with Robert J. Baseman, Andrew Davenport, Ramesh Natarajan, Noam Slonim, and Sholom Weiss. The study uses data mining, process trace data analysis, stochastic simulation, and production optimization to identify process settings that affect product quality and to improve production efficiency through planning and resource scheduling.
-
2013–2017
Watson for health care
In 2013, the IBM Watson team, which includes Bagchi, receives AAAI's Feigenbaum Prize for demonstrating that symbolic knowledge representation, natural-language understanding, and statistical machine learning can achieve human-level performance in real-time factual question answering. His 2013 paper "Watson: Beyond Jeopardy!" with David Ferrucci, Anthony Levas, David Gondek, and Erik T. Mueller presents a vision for applying Watson to health care. In 2017, he coauthors "WatsonPaths" with Adam Lally, David A. Ferrucci, Erik T. Mueller, and others; the system answers medical scenarios and shows improved accuracy over multiple baselines on test-preparation questions.
-
2021
Canonicalizing open knowledge graphs
In 2021, he coauthors the EMNLP paper "Open Knowledge Graphs Canonicalization using Variational Autoencoders" with Sarthak Dash, Gaetano Rossiello, Nandana Mihindukulasooriya, and Alfio Gliozzo. Its CUVA model jointly learns embeddings and cluster assignments to canonicalize noun and relation phrases in open knowledge graphs.
-
2022
Transformer encodings for tables
In 2022, he coauthors the Findings of NAACL paper "Permutation Invariant Strategy Using Transformer Encoders for Table Understanding" with Sarthak Dash, Nandana Mihindukulasooriya, and Alfio Gliozzo. Its Transformer encoding strategy preserves permutation invariance across rows and columns and is evaluated on column-type annotation, relation extraction, and entity linking.
-
2023
Linking tables to new ontologies
In 2023, he coauthors an ISWC paper with Sarthak Dash, Nandana Mihindukulasooriya, and Alfio Gliozzo that links table columns to types in ontologies unseen during training. The paper frames this as zero-shot linking and evaluates Transformer encodings on three public benchmark datasets.
-
As of October 2026
AI director at Vizlitics
As of October 2026, he is director of artificial intelligence at Vizlitics in Bedford Hills, New York; the company develops AI-based tools for healthcare settings. In October 2026, he coauthors a Clinical Journal of Oncology Nursing study of an AI model that identifies and tracks prostate-cancer care states, with 95% agreement with clinician-assigned states.
