Researcher

Adam Lally

Adam Lally helped build IBM Watson's DeepQA question-answering system and worked on natural-language processing and unstructured information management. He earned computer-science degrees from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute and Columbia University, and contributed to UIMA and Prolog-based language processing in Watson. As a member of the Watson team, he shared the 2013 AAAI Feigenbaum Prize and coauthored WatsonPaths, a scenario-based question-answering system, in 2017. As of October 2026, he is a senior researcher at the Institute for Advanced Enterprise AI, after managing inference systems at Elemental Cognition.

Timeline

  1. 1998–2006

    Computer science degrees

He earns a BS in computer science from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in 1998 and an MS in computer science from Columbia University in 2006.

  2. 2004

    The UIMA architecture

He and David Ferrucci publish a 2004 paper on UIMA's architecture for unstructured information processing. Before Watson, he leads software engineering for UIMA.

  3. 2010

    The DeepQA project

He coauthors the 2010 AI Magazine overview of IBM's DeepQA project and helps develop the Watson system architecture as a member of its algorithms team.

  4. 2011

    Prolog for Watson

In February 2011, Watson defeats Ken Jennings and Brad Rutter in a Jeopardy! contest. Lally and Paul Fodor publish a 2011 article on Prolog-based natural-language processing in IBM Watson.

  5. 2013

    A Feigenbaum Prize

As a member of the IBM Watson team, he shares the 2013 AAAI Feigenbaum Prize for demonstrating human-level, real-time factual question answering through symbolic knowledge representation, natural-language understanding, and statistical machine learning.

  6. 2017

    WatsonPaths for scenarios

With collaborators, he coauthors WatsonPaths, a 2017 system that breaks an input scenario into pieces of information, asks Watson relevant subquestions, and uses probabilistic inference to reach an answer.

  7. As of October 2026

    Senior researcher at IAEAI

As of October 2026, he is a senior researcher at the Institute for Advanced Enterprise AI. Before joining, he serves as Manager of Inference Systems at Elemental Cognition.
