Benoit M. Dawant
Also known as Benoît M. Dawant
Benoit Dawant is an electrical engineer and medical imaging researcher whose work applies machine learning and image analysis to surgery and clinical care. After earning an M.S. degree at the Université Catholique de Louvain and a Ph.D. in electrical and computer engineering at the University of Houston in 1987, he became a professor at Vanderbilt University and was named an IEEE Fellow in 2010. At Vanderbilt, he co-developed the CranialVault database and CRAVE software for Parkinson’s surgery in 2010, described automated image-guided cochlear implant programming in 2013, and contributed to machine-learning methods for surgical video analysis in 2021 and monkeypox severity measurement in 2022. Named a Senior Member of SPIE in August 2024 while serving as founding director of the Vanderbilt Institute for Surgery and Engineering and interim chair of electrical and computer engineering, Dawant coauthored a July 2026 study on transcranial focused ultrasound and is Cornelius Vanderbilt Professor of Engineering Emeritus and Professor Emeritus of Electrical Engineering.

Timeline
-
By 1987
Engineering degrees at Louvain and Houston
He earns an M.S. degree in electrical and computer engineering from the Université Catholique de Louvain in Belgium and a Ph.D. degree in electrical and computer engineering from the University of Houston in 1987.
-
January 2010
Named an IEEE Fellow
Effective January 2010, the IEEE Board of Directors names Dawant, a Vanderbilt University professor of electrical engineering and computer engineering, an IEEE Fellow for his contributions to biomedical image analysis and image-guided medical interventions.
-
September 2010
CranialVault and CRAVE software
By September 2010, he works with Vanderbilt neurosurgeon Peter Konrad and research assistant professor Pierre-Francois D’Haese on the CranialVault database and its Cranial Vault Explorer (CRAVE) software for Parkinson’s surgery.
-
March 2013
Image-guided cochlear implant programming
In March 2013, he describes an automated image-guided programming method developed with Vanderbilt colleagues that improves hearing for people with cochlear implants.
-
2021–2022
Machine learning in clinical care
A 2021 machine-learning project developed with him analyzes surgical video captured by a camera worn around a surgeon’s neck. In September 2022, he and Erik Tkaczyk join Vanderbilt colleagues in developing an AI method to measure human monkeypox severity.
-
August 2024
SPIE Senior Member and VISE director
In August 2024, SPIE names him a Senior Member at its Optics + Photonics 2024 conference in San Diego, while he serves at Vanderbilt as founding director of the Vanderbilt Institute for Surgery and Engineering and interim chair of the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering.
-
July 2026
Transcranial focused ultrasound
In July 2026, he coauthors a Nature Communications paper showing that low-intensity transcranial focused ultrasound modulates neural activity in the macaque monkey thalamus and insular cortex.
-
As of October 2026
Engineering professor emeritus
Named to Vanderbilt’s 2026 emeriti faculty, he is Cornelius Vanderbilt Professor of Engineering Emeritus and Professor Emeritus of Electrical Engineering.
