Stephen Crain

Stephen Crain is a psycholinguist who studies how children acquire the meanings of logical words, and he has written on large language models as accounts of human language. He earned a philosophy BA at UCLA in 1971 and a cognitive science PhD with an emphasis in linguistics at UC Irvine in 1980, then taught linguistics at the University of Connecticut and headed the linguistics department at the University of Maryland before moving to Macquarie University in 2004. There he held an Australian Research Council Federation Fellowship, led teams that built the world's first MEG system for studying children's cognitive processing, became a Distinguished Professor in 2010, and directed the ARC Centre of Excellence in Cognition and its Disorders. His 2012 book The Emergence of Meaning argued for a common logical nativism underlying human language and logical reasoning, and in 2024 he joined three coauthors in a Nature letter saying that large language models should not be seen as models of how human language works. He is an emeritus professor at Macquarie University.

Timeline

  1. 1971–1980

    Degrees from UCLA and Irvine

He earns a BA in philosophy at the University of California, Los Angeles in 1971. In 1980, he completes a PhD in cognitive science with an emphasis in linguistics at the University of California, Irvine.

  2. 1986–2003

    Linguistics at Connecticut and Maryland

He is a professor of linguistics at the University of Connecticut from 1986 to 1995, and a senior scientist at Haskins Laboratories in New Haven. From 1995 to 2003, he heads the Linguistics Department at the University of Maryland, where he establishes the Cognitive Neuroscience of Language Laboratory in 1999 and the KIT/Maryland MEG Laboratory in 2001.

  3. 2004–2009

    Federation Fellow at Macquarie

He joins Macquarie University in 2004, serves as deputy director of the Macquarie Centre for Cognitive Science until 2010, and holds an Australian Research Council Federation Fellowship from 2004 to 2009. In 2006, he becomes a Fellow of the Academy of the Social Sciences in Australia.

  4. 2006–2008

    Two MEG systems at Macquarie

He leads international teams of researchers and engineers that develop the first whole-head adult MEG system in Australasia, established in 2006, and the world's first MEG system for studying cognitive processing in children, established in 2008. He plans to use the child system to investigate whether children have innate language ability.

  5. 2010–2017

    Directing a centre of excellence

Macquarie University appoints him a Distinguished Professor in 2010. He leads the successful bid for the ARC Centre of Excellence in Cognition and its Disorders, funded from 2011 to 2017, and serves as its director.

  6. 2012

    A book on logical nativism

Cambridge University Press publishes his book The Emergence of Meaning in 2012. It argues that a common logical nativism underpins human language and logical reasoning, and it reports new experiments on how children acquire the logical concepts of English and Mandarin Chinese.

  7. 2024–2025

A Nature letter on language models

In March 2024, he and Johan J. Bolhuis, Sandiway Fong and Andrea Moro publish the Nature letter "Three reasons why AI doesn’t model human language", which says large language models should not be seen as models of how human language works and is acquired. In December 2025, the four post an arXiv commentary titled "Large language models are not about natural language", which calls these systems useless for linguistics.

  8. As of October 2026

    Emeritus professor at Macquarie

He is an emeritus professor in the School of Psychological Sciences at Macquarie University.
