Simukai Utete
Simukai Utete is a Zimbabwean robotics scientist whose work connects sensor networks, data fusion and autonomous robots. A Rhodes Scholar at Balliol College, Oxford, she earned a DPhil in robotics and led CSIR's field robotics group. Her research explored reliable routing, local processing and voting to resolve conflicting sensor data. As of October 2026, she co-supervises doctoral research on robot games at Stellenbosch University.

Timeline
-
1991
A Rhodes Scholarship at Balliol
In 1991, she is a Rhodes Scholar from Zimbabwe at Balliol College, Oxford. She holds a DPhil in Robotics (Engineering Science) from Oxford.
-
1994
Reliable routing in sensor networks
She coauthors Routing for Reliability in Decentralised Sensing Networks with H.F. Durrant-Whyte in 1994. The paper demonstrates how sensing networks can overcome local failures and reallocate tasks while keeping system constraints.
-
1998
Local sensor decisions
In 1998, she publishes Local Information Processing for Decision Making in Decentralised Sensing Networks. The paper examines local information processing for decisions when sensor nodes receive inconsistent information.
-
1999
Voting for robot decisions
With Billur Barshan and Birsel Ayrulu, she publishes Voting as Validation in Robot Programming in 1999. The paper investigates voting as a way to resolve conflicting sensor information and extract information through data fusion.
-
2009
Autonomous robot motion
She leads CSIR's Mobile Intelligent Autonomous Systems field robotics group in Pretoria for four years. In January 2009, she presents an autonomous robot motion problem for the group at Wits' Mathematics in Industry Study Group.
-
2016–2020
Research leadership at AIMS
In June 2016, she is a Senior Researcher at AIMS South Africa during a visit by a delegation from the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation. By 2020, she is the academic director of AIMS South Africa.
-
January 2024
MISG 2024 organising committee
In January 2024, she serves on Wits' Mathematics in Industry Study Group organising committee as an African Institute for Mathematical Sciences researcher.
-
As of October 2026
Robot games supervision
As of October 2026, she co-supervises doctoral student Jordan Masakuna's research on robot games with randomisation at Stellenbosch University.
