Simon K. Warfield
Also known as Simon Keith Warfield, S K Warfield, S WARFIELD, S Warfield, S. K. Warfield, S. Warfield
Simon K. Warfield is a medical-imaging researcher whose computational work helps analyze MRI. He earned a PhD in computer science and engineering at the University of New South Wales in 1997, completed medical-imaging postdoctoral training at Harvard and Brigham and Women's, founded the Computational Radiology Laboratory in 2001, and joined Children's Hospital Boston in 2007. His STAPLE and L3 methods address image-segmentation validation and classifier fusion; in 2024, he coauthored deep-learning and motion-correction methods for fetal MRI. As of October 2026, he is Director of Radiology Research at Boston Children's Hospital and Thorne Griscom Professor of Radiology at Harvard Medical School.
Timeline
-
1997
A computer science PhD
He earns a PhD in Computer Science and Engineering from the University of New South Wales in April 1997.
-
2001
Founding the radiology lab
In 2001, he founds the Computational Radiology Laboratory (CRL) at Boston Children's Hospital.
-
2004
The STAPLE algorithm
With Kelly H. Zou and William M. Wells, he publishes STAPLE in 2004, an algorithm for validating image segmentation.
-
January 2007
Joining Children's Hospital
He completes postdoctoral training in medical imaging at Harvard Medical School and Brigham and Women's Hospital. In January 2007, he joins Children's Hospital Boston after working in the Radiology Department at Brigham and Women's Hospital.
-
2011
The L3 segmentation method
With Neil I. Weisenfeld, he introduces L3 in 2011, a brain-MRI segmentation method that unifies label fusion and statistical classification.
-
2024
Deep learning for fetal MRI
In 2024, he coauthors a multi-task deep-learning method that segments fetal brain tissue and 31 white-matter tracts, then parcels the cortex and delineates deep gray nuclei and white matter into 96 regions.
-
2024
Motion-robust fetal MRI
He coauthors a 2024 fetal-brain MRI method for quantitative T2* and B0 mapping that uses motion estimation and correction in its reconstruction.
-
As of October 2026
Radiology research director
As of October 2026, he is Director of Radiology Research and Thorne Griscom Professor of Radiology at Harvard Medical School. He directs the Computational Radiology Laboratory and serves as Site Co-Director for Boston Children's Hospital in the Harvard CTSC Translational Technologies Imaging Consortium.
