Keith Dreyer

Also known as Keith J. Dreyer

Keith Dreyer is a radiologist whose career connects clinical imaging with artificial intelligence. He earned a DO in 1982 and a computer science PhD in 1998, then helped create a clinical data science center at Partners HealthCare. In 2021, he coauthored a federated-learning study that used EXAM to predict COVID-19 patients’ oxygen needs; Mass General Brigham partnered to deploy AI triage for chest X-rays and head CTs in 2023. TIME named him to its TIME100 AI list in 2023, and in 2024 he led a challenge that gave clinicians a way to evaluate healthcare AI in simulated settings. As of October 2026, he is Mass General Brigham’s Chief Data Science Officer and Chief Imaging Information Officer.

Timeline

  1. 1982–1998

    Training in medicine and computing

He earns a DO from Michigan State University College of Osteopathic Medicine in 1982 and a PhD from LaSalle University in 1998. He also holds degrees in mathematics and image processing and completes medical fellowships in imaging informatics and magnetic resonance imaging at Harvard’s MGH.

  2. 2017

A Center for Clinical Data Science

Some of his computer science projects touch AI; he returns to radiology and medicine and focuses on digital infrastructure. In 2017, he serves as chief data science officer at Partners HealthCare and helps create the Center for Clinical Data Science, which has about 35 people and 41 projects in its pipeline.

  3. 2021

    Federated learning for COVID-19

He coauthors a study that trains EXAM, a federated model, on data from 20 institutes to predict oxygen requirements for symptomatic people with COVID-19. The study reports 38% greater generalizability than models trained at a single site.

  4. 2023

    TIME100 and Annalise Triage

TIME names him to its inaugural TIME 100 AI list in September 2023. In November 2023, Mass General Brigham and Annalise.ai announce a partnership to deploy Annalise Triage across the system; the software monitors chest X-rays and non-contrast head CTs for time-sensitive findings.

  5. November 2024

    A clinician-led AI challenge

Mass General Brigham AI launches the Healthcare AI Challenge under his leadership. The program lets clinicians evaluate AI solutions in simulated care scenarios and share their assessments.

  6. June 2025

    Regulating generative AI in radiology

In June 2025, he coauthors the paper “Regulating generative AI in radiology practice: a trilaminar approach to balancing risk with innovation.”

  7. As of October 2026

    Chief data and imaging roles

He is Mass General Brigham’s Chief Data Science Officer and Chief Imaging Information Officer.
