Sebastiano Impedovo

Sebastiano Impedovo is an academic whose work connects pattern recognition with handwriting recognition and document analysis. He earned a physics degree at the University of Bari in 1972 and researched pattern recognition in its Department of Physics from 1972 to 1982. He coauthored papers on real-time handwritten numerals in 1976, optical character recognition in 1991 and handwriting-digit prototype generation in 2014; IAPR named him a Fellow in 1998. He chaired conferences on education and handwriting recognition in 2006 and 2012, then served as ICDAR's Honorary Chair in 2015. During his university career, he held leadership roles in computer science and doctoral education; as of October 2026, he is retired from his full professorship in Bari's Department of Computer Science.
