Said Hadjerrouit

Said Hadjerrouit is a Norwegian computer scientist who earned an engineering doctorate in medical expert systems and artificial intelligence and built a career in informatics and mathematics education at the University of Agder. At the Technische Universität Berlin, he received a master's degree in 1985 and the doctorate in 1992, and he joined Agder in 1991. From 2008, he worked on digital tools in mathematics teaching, became a professor in 2010, and received Outstanding Paper Awards in 2010 and 2012. In 2023, he and Nils Kristian Hansen published a Use-Modify-Create study of computational thinking and programming in mathematical problem solving, and a 2024 chapter on the topic appeared in the Springer volume Artificial Intelligence for Supporting Human Cognition and Exploratory Learning in the Digital Age. He is a professor of informatics and mathematics education at the University of Agder.

Timeline

  1. 1985–1992

    Medical expert systems doctorate

He earns a master's degree in software engineering at the Technische Universität Berlin in 1985 and works there as an assistant from 1985 to 1990. In 1992, he receives a doctoral degree in engineering in the field of medical expert systems and artificial intelligence.

  2. 1991–2009

    Joining Agder University College

In 1991, he joins Agder University College in Kristiansand as an assistant professor in the Department of Electronic Data Processing. He is a visiting professor at the Technische Universität Berlin in 1998 and an associate professor in the Department of Mathematical Sciences at Agder from 1993 to 2009.

  3. 2004–2008

    Blended learning for Java

From 2004 to 2008, he focuses on computer science education. His 2008 article in Informatics in Education reports a study of a blended learning model for introductory Java programming, covering its design, implementation and evaluation.

  4. 2008–2013

    Professor of mathematics education

In 2008, he begins working on mathematics education and the use of digital tools in teaching and learning mathematics. He becomes a professor in the Department of Mathematical Sciences at Agder in 2010 and is a visiting professor at the University of Montpellier in 2013.

  5. 2010–2012

    Two paper awards

He receives Outstanding Paper Awards in 2010 and 2012. The 2012 award is for his paper 'Using Wikis for Collaborative Learning: Critical Evaluation and Recommendations,' presented at the IADIS e-Society conference in Berlin in March 2012, which offers recommendations for collaborative writing with wikis in teacher education.

  6. 2020–2024

    Leading a PhD committee

He leads the PhD committee for the Specialisation in Mathematical Sciences from 2020 to 2024.

  7. 2023–2024

    Computational thinking in mathematics

In 2023, he and Nils Kristian Hansen publish a Use-Modify-Create study in which two groups of undergraduate students solve a mathematical task through computational thinking and programming. They find that progression through the Use-Modify-Create continuum falls short of expectations and that students struggle to connect mathematical thinking, computational thinking and programming. In 2024, their chapter 'Supporting Students’ Mathematical Problem Solving Through Computational Thinking and Programming: A Use-Modify-Create Approach' appears in the Springer volume Artificial Intelligence for Supporting Human Cognition and Exploratory Learning in the Digital Age.

  8. As of October 2026

Professor at the University of Agder

He is a professor of informatics and mathematics education at the University of Agder. In 2026, he publishes a conference paper on student teachers' perceived technological, pedagogical and mathematical affordances of Scratch in mathematics education.
