Günter Hommel
Günter Hommel is a computer scientist and robotics researcher whose work linked real-time systems, autonomous robotics, and rehabilitation technology. After electrical engineering studies and a computer science doctorate at TU Berlin, he became professor at TU Munich and led TU Berlin's Real-Time Systems and Robotics Group. He coauthored research on the autonomous flying robot MARVIN, received a first prize at the International Aerial Robotics Competition, and earned a 2002 honorary doctorate. He helped lead a joint TU Berlin–Shanghai Jiao Tong research lab, guided an intelligent rehabilitation orthosis, and taught Robotics at Bahçeşehir University from 2012 to 2014.
Timeline
-
1970–1978
Electrical engineering and early research
A computer scientist and robotics researcher, he earns an electrical engineering diploma at TU Berlin in 1970 and completes a computer science doctorate there. In 1978, he joins Karlsruhe's Nuclear Research Center to work on real-time systems.
-
1980–1984
From GMD to TU Berlin
From 1980, he leads a software engineering research group at GMD in Bonn; in 1982 he becomes professor at TU Munich, where he works on real-time programming and robotics. In 1984, he becomes professor at TU Berlin and heads its Real-Time Systems and Robotics Group.
-
2000
MARVIN and a robotics prize
He coauthors a 2000 paper on cooperative autonomous mission planning for TU Berlin's flying robot MARVIN. He receives first prize at the International Aerial Robotics Competition in 2000.
-
2002
An honorary doctorate
He receives an honorary doctorate from Moscow State University of Instrument Engineering and Computer Science in 2002.
-
2005–2006
Shanghai labs and an intelligent orthosis
By 2005, he is an Advisory Professor at Shanghai Jiao Tong University. In 2005, TU Berlin nominates him to direct its Shanghai Information and Communication Technology research labs, while engineers under his leadership develop an intelligent orthosis that predicts a patient's intended movement. In 2006, he and Sheng Huanye jointly lead the TU Berlin–Shanghai Jiao Tong research institute, and he retires from TU Berlin.
-
2012–2014
Robotics at Bahçeşehir
From 2012 to 2014, he teaches Robotics at Bahçeşehir University in Istanbul, helps build a modern robotics lab, and supports its Berlin campus in finding lecturers. In 2014, he serves on the jury at Bahçeşehir's Robot Days.
