Ron Sun
Ron Sun is a cognitive scientist whose AI work develops computational models of learning, reasoning and human cognition. He received the Cognitive Science Society’s David Marr Award in 1991 and earned a PhD at Brandeis in 1992. His work includes CLARION, a computational architecture used for organizational simulations; he received the INNS Hebb Award in 2008 and served as the society’s president from 2011 to 2012. As of October 2026, he is Professor of Cognitive Science at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute.

Timeline
-
1991
The David Marr Award
Sun receives the 1991 David Marr Award from the Cognitive Science Society for research integrating rule-based and connectionist models.
-
1992
A Brandeis doctorate
He earns a PhD at Brandeis University in 1992.
-
1998–2002
CLARION and dual-process learning
In 1998, his paper on autonomous learning of sequential tasks appears under CLARION 3.0. CLARION is an integrative cognitive architecture; his 2002 book Duality of the Mind develops a computational account of human learning focused on implicit and explicit cognition.
-
2004
Modeling organizational decisions
In 2004, he is Professor of Cognitive Science at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute and Professor of Computer Science at the University of Missouri-Columbia. With Isaac Naveh, he uses CLARION to model organizational decision-making and study links between organizational design and cognition.
-
2008
A Hebb Award
INNS awards him the Donald O. Hebb Award in 2008.
-
2011–2012
President of INNS
He serves as president of the International Neural Network Society from 2011 to 2012.
-
2016–2026
Anatomy of the Mind and LLMs
He publishes Anatomy of the Mind in 2016, presenting a computational account of cognition built around the CLARION architecture. In 2025, he discusses combining CLARION with LLMs. In 2026, he publishes “Rethinking rationality and intelligence: Humans versus machines.”
-
As of October 2026
Professor at Rensselaer
He is Professor of Cognitive Science at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute. His research interests include cognitive architectures, learning and skill acquisition, and cognitive social simulation.
