Robin Fawcett

Also known as Robin P. Fawcett

Robin Fawcett is a linguist whose systemic-functional grammar supported computational research on language. He helped compile the Polytechnic of Wales child-language corpus and published its transcripts with Michael Perkins. With Gordon Tucker, he presented the GENESYS language generator; his 2000 book set out a theory of syntax for systemic functional linguistics. He taught the Cardiff Grammar at a Cardiff summer school in 2014. A 2020 volume examined the Cardiff Grammar he developed, and he is Emeritus Professor of Linguistics at Cardiff University.

Timeline

  1. 1978–1984

    The PoW language corpus

He is one of the original compilers of the Polytechnic of Wales (PoW) Corpus, collected from 1978 to 1984 to study how children aged six to twelve use syntactico-semantic constructs. The corpus uses his development of Hallidayan systemic-functional grammar in its hand-parsed codes and later supports computational work in COMMUNAL.

  2. 1980

    Child Language Transcripts

In 1980, he and Michael R. Perkins publish Child Language Transcripts 6–12 in four volumes.

  3. 1990

    GENESYS language generation

With Gordon Tucker, he presents GENESYS in a 1990 COLING paper as a very large, semantically based systemic functional generator.

  4. 2000

    A theory of syntax

In 2000, he publishes A Theory of Syntax for Systemic Functional Linguistics, which evaluates alternative approaches to representing language structure within systemic functional linguistics.

  5. 2008

An SFL book in three languages

In 2008, his Invitation to Systemic Functional Linguistics appears in English, Chinese, and Spanish.

  6. 2014

    Cardiff Grammar workshops

At Cardiff University's 2014 LinC Summer School, he leads workshops on the Cardiff Grammar.

  7. 2020

    Comparing Cardiff and Halliday

In 2020, a volume on systemic functional grammar examines the Cardiff Grammar he developed and compares it with the Hallidayan model.

  8. As of October 2026

    Emeritus Professor at Cardiff

He is Emeritus Professor of Linguistics at Cardiff University and is known for the Cardiff Grammar in systemic functional linguistics.
