Renate Schmidt

Also known as Renate A. Schmidt

Renate Schmidt is a computer scientist at the University of Manchester whose research in knowledge-based AI covers automated reasoning, description logics and ontology extraction. After a Doctor of Engineering at Saarland University in 1997, she published the MSPASS modal prover with Hustadt in 2000 and chaired the CADE-22 conference in Montreal in 2009. In 2018, she became principal investigator of an EPSRC project with SNOMED International on extracts of the SNOMED CT medical ontology, and in 2022 she coauthored a paper on extracting subontologies from SNOMED CT. She co-chaired FroCoS 2013, TABLEAUX 2017 and IJCAR 2024, and co-organized Dagstuhl seminars on deduction in 2019 and 2021. She is University Reader in Computer Science, Head of Postgraduate Research and Leader of the Formal Methods Research Group at Manchester, and an Associate Editor of the Journal of Artificial Intelligence Research and the Artificial Intelligence journal.

Timeline

  1. 1997

    Doctorate at Saarland University

She earns a Doctor of Engineering at Saarland University in November 1997, for work titled "Optimised Modal Translation and Resolution".

  2. 2000

    The MSPASS modal prover

In 2000, she and U. Hustadt publish "MSPASS: Modal Reasoning by Translation and First-Order Resolution" in the TABLEAUX 2000 proceedings. MSPASS extends the first-order theorem prover SPASS so that it works as a modal logic prover, a description logic prover and a prover for the relational calculus.

  3. 2009

    Chairing CADE-22 in Montreal

In August 2009, she is program chair of the 22nd International Conference on Automated Deduction (CADE-22) in Montreal. She also edits its proceedings, published by Springer in Lecture Notes in Artificial Intelligence.

  4. 2013–2017

    Chairing FroCoS and TABLEAUX

She is program co-chair of the 9th International Symposium on Frontiers of Combining Systems (FroCoS 2013) in Nancy in September 2013, and of TABLEAUX 2017 in Brasilia in September 2017. She co-edits both sets of proceedings for Springer, the second with C. Nalon.

  5. 2018–2022

    SNOMED CT subontologies

From September 2018 to February 2019, she is principal investigator of the EPSRC project "Comparison and Abstraction of SNOMED CT Ontologies" with industry partner IHTSDO (SNOMED International), which evaluates forgetting tools including her group's FAME and LETHE. In 2022, she coauthors "Extracting Subontologies from SNOMED CT" with Del-Pinto and Gao and gives an invited talk at DL 2022 on knowledge extraction based on forgetting and subontology generation.

  6. 2019–2021

    Dagstuhl seminars on deduction

In September 2019, she co-organizes Dagstuhl Seminar 19371 on Deduction Beyond Satisfiability, and in September 2021 Dagstuhl Seminar 21371 on Integrated Deduction. She coauthors both seminar reports, published in Dagstuhl Reports in 2020 and 2022.

  7. 2024

    Co-chairing IJCAR 2024

She is one of three programme chairs of the 12th International Joint Conference on Automated Reasoning (IJCAR 2024), held in Nancy in July 2024, together with Christoph Benzmüller and Marijn Heule.

  8. As of October 2026

Reader and head of postgraduate research

She is University Reader in Computer Science, Head of Postgraduate Research and Leader of the Formal Methods Research Group at Manchester, and Associate Editor of the Journal of Artificial Intelligence Research and the Artificial Intelligence journal. In July 2025, she gives the invited talk "Just the Right Amount: SNOMED CT Content Extraction" at Reisensburg Castle, and in July 2026 she co-organizes the FLoC workshop on Craig interpolation, Beth definability and quantifier elimination.
