Pino Caballero Gil
Also known as Pino Teresa Caballero Gil, Pino Caballero-Gil
Pino Caballero Gil is a Spanish mathematician and cryptology researcher, a professor of Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence at the University of La Laguna who leads its CryptULL research group. She earned a mathematics degree in 1990 and a doctorate in 1995, wrote Introducción a la criptografía in 1996, and founded CryptULL in 1998. After serving as dean of the Faculty of Mathematics from 2006 to 2010, she became a full professor in 2015, and in 2019 she won the Más Mujer Innovation award and was named responsible for the university's agreement with Binter Sistemas to sponsor a cybersecurity chair. Her recent work pairs machine learning and quantum computing with cybersecurity, including the IACTA project that began in 2024. She directs the Binter Institutional Chair of Cybersecurity and is academic director of the Master's in Cybersecurity and Data Intelligence.
Timeline
-
1990–1995
Mathematics and a La Laguna doctorate
In 1990, she earns a mathematics degree at the University of La Laguna and joins its Department of Computer and Systems Engineering. Her 1995 doctorate there studies the security level of very efficient ciphers.
-
1996–1998
A cryptography book and CryptULL
In 1996, she writes Introducción a la criptografía, the first Spanish-language book published in Spain on the foundations and methods of cryptography. In 1998, she founds the CryptULL cryptology research group at La Laguna and receives the Premio Día de Canarias para Jóvenes Investigadores.
-
2006–2010
Dean of the Faculty of Mathematics
From 2006 to 2010, she is dean of the Faculty of Mathematics at La Laguna. She guides the introduction of a dual degree in Statistics and Mathematics, and the number of new students doubles.
-
2008–2012
Vehicle networks and Vaipho
Between 2008 and 2012, her research on early proposals for a vehicle communications network against traffic jams and parking shortages yields three doctoral theses, a prize, many articles and her first patent. The VAiPho (VANET in Phones) project, built on that work, wins the Fyde-CajaCanarias Proyecto Empresarial award in 2011.
-
2015–2016
Full professor and RENIC founder
In 2015, she becomes a full professor of Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence at La Laguna. In 2016, she is a founding member of the Spanish Network of Excellence on Cybersecurity Research (RENIC). Her research covers cryptography, cryptanalysis, cryptographic protocols and wireless communications security.
-
2019
Innovation prize and Binter chair
In February 2019, the regional magazine Más Mujer names her the winner of its Innovation award. In 2019, Binter Sistemas and the University of La Laguna agree to sponsor the Binter Institutional Chair in Cybersecurity, with her named responsible for the university, and the chair exists to launch a master's degree in cybersecurity and data intelligence.
-
2023–2024
Machine learning for cybersecurity
In 2023, she coauthors Detection of malicious URLs using Machine Learning in the journal Wireless Networks. In 2024, she publishes Optimizing Quantum Machine Learning for Proactive Cybersecurity with Carlos Rosa-Remedios and begins leading IACTA, a Fundación CajaCanarias project on artificial intelligence and quantum computing applied to cybersecurity.
-
As of October 2026
Directing the Binter cybersecurity chair
She directs the Binter Institutional Chair of Cybersecurity, is academic director of the Master's in Cybersecurity and Data Intelligence, and coordinates CryptULL. In March 2026, she organizes the XIX Spanish Meeting on Cryptology and Information Security (RECSI) at La Laguna.
