Ping Luo

Ping Luo is a professor affiliated with the HKU Musketeers Foundation Institute of Data Science, and the ICCV 2015 paper he co-authored is the reference for the CelebA face dataset. He earned a PhD at the Chinese University of Hong Kong in 2014 under Xiaoou Tang and Xiaogang Wang, and he took first runner-up honours in the 2014 ImageNet ILSVRC Challenge. Before he joined HKU's Department of Computer Science as an assistant professor in July 2019, he worked as a research director at SenseTime Research. MIT Technology Review named him one of 20 Innovators Under 35 honourees for Asia Pacific in 2020. In 2024, he received an AI 2000 Most Influential Scholar honourable mention.

    A PhD under Tang and Wang

    In 2014, he completes a PhD in information engineering at the Chinese University of Hong Kong, supervised by Xiaoou Tang and Xiaogang Wang.

    First runner-up at ImageNet 2014

    The 2014 ImageNet ILSVRC Challenge gives him first runner-up honours.

  3. 2015

    Face attributes in the wild

    He co-authors Deep Learning Face Attributes in the Wild, published at ICCV 2015. The CelebA dataset points to the same paper for more details.

  4. 2017

    First place at DAVIS 2017

    He takes first place in the 2017 DAVIS Challenge on Video Object Segmentation.

  5. July 2019

    Joining HKU as assistant professor

    In July 2019, he joins HKU's Department of Computer Science as an assistant professor, after working as a research director at SenseTime Research.

  6. 2020

    An Innovators Under 35 honour

    MIT Technology Review names him one of 20 Innovators Under 35 honourees for Asia Pacific in 2020.

  7. 2024

    AI 2000 honourable mention

    One of six HKU engineering scholars, he receives an AI 2000 Most Influential Scholar honourable mention in 2024, for work from 2014 to 2023.
