Researcher

Niloy J. Mitra

Niloy Mitra is a computer graphics researcher whose work spans 3D shape analysis and machine-learning methods for geometric content. He earned a bachelor’s degree at IIT Kharagpur and electrical-engineering degrees at Stanford, then held research and faculty posts in Vienna, Delhi, and KAUST before establishing his position at UCL in 2011. His papers include the 2007 SIGGRAPH work Symmetrization and the CLIP2StyleGAN preprint, which links CLIP and StyleGAN latent spaces to identify image-edit directions without human guidance. His work earned ACM SIGGRAPH and BCS awards, a Eurographics technical award and fellowship, and induction into the SIGGRAPH Academy in 2023. As of October 2026, he is a Principal Scientist at Adobe Research in London and leads its London Lab and UCL’s Smart Geometry Group.

Timeline

  1. By 2006

    IIT Kharagpur and Stanford degrees

He earns a bachelor’s degree from IIT Kharagpur. In 2002, he earns an MS in electrical engineering at Stanford; in September 2006, he completes his PhD there under Leonidas Guibas and Marc Levoy.

  2. By 2011

    Postdoc and faculty roles

Before establishing his position at UCL in 2011, he works as a postdoctoral scholar at TU Vienna and as an assistant professor at IIT Delhi and KAUST. Helmut Pottmann advises his postdoctoral work.

  3. 2007

    Symmetrization at SIGGRAPH

At SIGGRAPH in 2007, he coauthors Symmetrization with Leonidas Guibas and Mark Pauly. His research develops algorithms for detecting symmetry and structural regularity in 3D objects.

  4. 2013–2015

    SIGGRAPH and Needham awards

In 2013, the ACM SIGGRAPH Significant New Researcher Award recognizes his work on discovering and using structure and function in 3D objects. He receives the BCS Roger Needham Award in 2015.

  5. 2019

    A Eurographics technical award

Eurographics presents him with its Outstanding Technical Contributions Award in 2019.

  6. 2021

    Eurographics fellowship and CLIP2StyleGAN

Eurographics elects him a Fellow in 2021 for his contributions to shape analysis, data-driven geometry processing and computational fabrication. His work uses novel shape representations to explore collections and synthesize editable geometric content. In December 2021, he coauthors CLIP2StyleGAN, a preprint that links pretrained StyleGAN and CLIP latent spaces to identify semantically labeled image-edit directions without human guidance.

  7. 2023

    SIGGRAPH Academy induction

He is inducted into the SIGGRAPH Academy in 2023.

  8. As of October 2026

    Principal Scientist at Adobe

At Adobe Research, he is a Principal Scientist in London, runs the Adobe Research London Lab, and leads the Smart Geometry Group at University College London. His current research develops machine-learning frameworks that generate high-quality geometric and appearance models. In 2026, he coauthors the CVPR paper LoST, which orders 3D shape tokens by semantic salience.
