Researcher

Niloofar Maani

Niloofar Maani is a PhD student at the German Research Center for Artificial Intelligence (DFKI) who applies machine learning to multi-omics data for health care and diagnostic systems. She studied electrical engineering at the University of Shiraz from 2013 to 2017 and signal processing and communication engineering at the University of Erlangen-Nuremberg from 2019 to 2023. In July 2025, she coauthored a systematic review of visible neural networks for multi-omics integration in Frontiers in Artificial Intelligence, and in March 2026 she was among the authors of the curATime reports curAIscid and biosignATure. She is a PhD student and research assistant in DFKI's Data Science and its Applications group, where she researches multi-omics data imputation.

Timeline

  1. 2013–2017

    Electrical engineering at Shiraz

She studies electrical engineering at the University of Shiraz from 2013 to 2017 for a BSc degree.

  2. 2019–2023

    Signal processing at Erlangen-Nuremberg

From 2019 to 2023, she studies for an MSc in advanced signal processing and communication engineering at the University of Erlangen-Nuremberg (Friedrich-Alexander-Universität Erlangen-Nürnberg).

  3. July 2025

A review of visible neural networks

In July 2025, she coauthors the systematic review “Visible neural networks for multi-omics integration: a critical review” in Frontiers in Artificial Intelligence, with David Antony Selby, Sebastian Vollmer and others. The review identifies 86 recent papers that implement biologically informed neural networks, and her affiliations are DFKI's Data Science and its Applications group and the Department of Computer Science at the University of Kaiserslautern–Landau (RPTU).

  4. March 2026

    Two curATime final reports

In March 2026, she is among the authors of two curATime final reports: “curAIscid - curATime AI science & development” and “biosignATure - curATime”, which covers systems-oriented multi-omics identification of biomarker signatures for the detection, quantification and treatment of atherothrombosis.

  5. As of October 2026

    PhD student at DFKI

She is a PhD student and research assistant in the Data Science and its Applications group at DFKI, where she researches multi-omics data imputation. Her interest is the use of machine learning to improve health care and diagnostic systems.
