Timeline
-
2013–2016
Engineering and computer science degrees
She earns a BS in computer engineering at Sharif University of Technology in Tehran in 2013. At Stanford University, she earns an MS in computer science in 2016.
-
2015
Dynamo for crowd workers
In 2015, she coauthors “We Are Dynamo: Overcoming Stalling and Friction in Collective Action for Crowd Workers.” The project supports collective action by Amazon Mechanical Turk workers and involves collaboration with worker rights advocates.
-
2018
Stanford doctorate and Berkeley appointment
She completes her PhD in computer science at Stanford University in 2018. In 2018, she joins UC Berkeley's School of Information as an assistant professor.
-
2018
Hive for collective design
In 2018, she presents Hive, which organizes people into small teams and rotates membership to mix viewpoints. She describes its use with Mozilla and disability advocates to explore accessible web browsing.
-
2022
William T. Grant Scholar
In 2022, she becomes a William T. Grant Scholar for research on community participation in school assignment software. Her project involves parents and administrators in system design to help school assignment algorithms reduce inequality.
-
2023
Detecting harmful translation errors
In 2023, she coauthors “Physician Detection of Clinical Harm in Machine Translation,” which studies how quality estimates and backtranslation help physicians assess translated emergency department discharge instructions. The paper receives an Outstanding Paper Award at EMNLP 2023.
-
By 2025
Launching Across AI
By 2025, she is a co-founder of Across AI with University of Southern California professor Afshin Nikzad and entrepreneur Steven Mih. In 2025, she serves as chief product officer while on leave from Berkeley's School of Information, developing AI agents for business tasks such as identifying sales opportunities and risks.
-
2025
Yodeai for knowledge work
In 2025, she coauthors “Generative AI in Knowledge Work: Design Implications for Data Navigation and Decision-Making.” The team develops Yodeai to study AI support for combining information across platforms and tests it with 16 product managers, identifying needs for user control, transparent collaboration and integration of background knowledge.
-
As of October 2026
Berkeley professor and Across CEO
As of October 2026, she is an associate professor in UC Berkeley's School of Information, with an affiliated appointment in Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences and a faculty role in Berkeley AI Research Lab.
