Lei Xing

Lei Xing is a Stanford professor of medical physics who applies AI to medical imaging and cancer treatment. He earned a physics PhD at Johns Hopkins in 1992 and joined Stanford in 1997. His lab's work included CT reconstruction from a single projection in 2019, a colorectal cancer survival tool in 2020, and NeRP image reconstruction in 2021. He received the American Association of Physicists in Medicine's Quimby Lifetime Achievement Award in 2023. In 2024, he coauthored the paper introducing GPT-RadPlan, a system that uses GPT-4Vision to automate radiotherapy planning.

Timeline

  1. 1992

    A physics doctorate

He earns a PhD in physics at Johns Hopkins University in 1992.

  2. 1997–2010

    Joining the Stanford faculty

In 1997, he joins Stanford as an assistant professor, advances to associate professor in 2003, and becomes a professor in 2008. In 2010, the professor of radiation oncology becomes the Jacob Haimson Professor and directs the Department of Radiation Oncology's Radiation Physics Division.

  3. 2016

    An AIMBE fellowship

In 2016, he joins the American Institute for Medical and Biological Engineering College of Fellows. The fellowship recognizes his contributions to medical physics and biomedical engineering, particularly inverse treatment planning and X-ray molecular imaging.

  4. October 2019

    CT from one projection

In October 2019, his lab publishes research in Nature Biomedical Engineering on using deep learning to reconstruct CT images from a single projection view.

  5. 2020

    Predicting colorectal cancer survival

In 2020, he develops an AI algorithm with Jean Emmanuel Bibault and Daniel Chang to predict survival for people with colorectal cancer. The tool uses 32 patient details, including age and cancer stage, and gives reasons for its predictions.

  6. 2021

    NeRP image reconstruction

In 2021, he coauthors the NeRP preprint with Liyue Shen and John Pauly. The method uses a prior image and sparsely sampled measurements to reconstruct images, with demonstrations in CT and MRI.

  7. 2023

    The Quimby lifetime award

In 2023, he receives the Edith H. Quimby Award for Lifetime Achievement in Medical Physics from the American Association of Physicists in Medicine.

  8. 2024

    GPT-RadPlan treatment planning

In 2024, he coauthors the preprint introducing GPT-RadPlan, an automated radiotherapy planning system that uses GPT-4Vision. The system evaluates radiation dose distributions and gives feedback to adjust planning parameters for prostate and head-and-neck cancer cases.

  9. October 2026

    AI for upright proton therapy

In October 2026, he serves as a co-investigator with Xianjin Dai, Billy Loo and Zhuoran Jiang on a proposal that receives a $75,000 Stanford Cancer Institute Innovation Award. Their project, AI-Enhanced Image Registration for Upright Proton Therapy, aims to align medical images acquired in different body positions.

  10. As of October 2026

    Professor of medical physics

As of October 2026, he is the Jacob Haimson and Sarah S. Donaldson Professor of Medical Physics at Stanford and directs the Medical Physics Division in the Department of Radiation Oncology. His research includes AI in medicine, medical imaging and treatment planning.
