Researcher

Daniel L. Rubin

Daniel Rubin is an imaging informatics researcher at Stanford whose work links radiology images with clinical data and machine learning. He earned a master's degree in biomedical informatics there in 2000, and by 2014 his Rubin Lab had built ePAD, a free web platform for annotating images in the Annotation and Image Markup format. From 2016 to 2024, he directed biomedical informatics at the Stanford Cancer Institute, and he coauthored a 2017 review of deep learning for brain MRI segmentation. His honours include fellowships of the American College of Medical Informatics (2012) and the Society for Imaging Informatics in Medicine (2018), and the 2017 Distinguished Investigator Award of the Academy for Radiology & Biomedical Imaging Research. As Professor Emeritus of Biomedical Data Science and Radiology, he leads Stanford's AI in Performing Arts laboratory, which works with the Opera Verace Foundation, a charity he co-founded, to bring younger audiences to opera with conversational AI agents and data tools.

Timeline

  1. 2000

    A biomedical informatics master's

He earns a master's degree in biomedical informatics from Stanford in 2000 and does his clinical training in radiology at Stanford.

  2. 2009

    Assistant professor at Stanford

As an assistant professor of radiology and of medicine at Stanford, he chairs the RadLex Steering Committee of the Radiological Society of North America, a project to develop a standardized radiology terminology. In 2009, he discusses RadLex and the emerging Annotation and Image Markup (AIM) standard for describing what images show in an Applied Radiology article.

  3. 2012–2013

    Fellowship and an educator award

He becomes a Fellow of the American College of Medical Informatics in 2012. The Radiological Society of North America gives him its Honored Educator Award in 2012 and 2013.

  4. By 2014

    The ePAD annotation platform

By 2014, his Rubin Lab at the Stanford School of Medicine has built ePAD, a free web-based platform for reviewing images, recording semantic annotations and making measurements. ePAD stores its data in the National Cancer Institute's Annotation and Image Markup (AIM) standard, and he is setting up a pilot at the Stanford Cancer Institute.

  5. 2016–2024

    Cancer Institute informatics director

From 2016 to 2024, he is Director of Biomedical Informatics for the Stanford Cancer Institute, and from 2018 to 2024 he co-directs its Cancer Imaging and Early Detection Program. From 2011 to 2024, he also directs the Scholarly Concentration in Informatics and Data Driven Medicine at the School of Medicine. By 2018, he is principal investigator of two centers in the National Cancer Institute's Quantitative Imaging Network.

  6. 2017–2018

    Brain MRI deep learning review

In August 2017, he coauthors the review Deep Learning for Brain MRI Segmentation: State of the Art and Future Directions with Zeynettin Akkus, Alfiia Galimzianova, Assaf Hoogi and Bradley J. Erickson, and it wins the Journal of Digital Imaging's Most Downloaded Paper Award. The Academy for Radiology & Biomedical Imaging Research gives him its Distinguished Investigator Award in 2017, and the Society for Imaging Informatics in Medicine inducts him as a Fellow in 2018.

  7. 2021

A volume on AI in radiology

Elsevier publishes Artificial Intelligence in Radiology, an issue of Radiologic Clinics of North America, in November 2021, with Rubin as its author. His Laboratory of Quantitative Imaging and Artificial Intelligence at Stanford develops multi-modal deep learning models, weak supervision methods and natural language processing for medical data.

  8. As of October 2026

    An AI lab for opera

His administrative roles at Stanford end in 2024. As Professor Emeritus of Biomedical Data Science and Radiology, he leads the Stanford AI in Performing Arts laboratory. The lab works with the Opera Verace Foundation, a charity he co-founded with Terry Desser, to reach opera listeners aged 18 to 45 through conversational AI agents, an AI-powered live-avatar docent and the STAGE performing arts data platform.
