Mohsen Moghaddam

Mohsen Moghaddam is an industrial engineering researcher who studies human-centered AI and extended reality for manufacturing work and learning. He earned engineering degrees at the University of Tehran and Purdue, worked in manufacturing research at Purdue and GE-Purdue, and joined Northeastern as an assistant professor in 2018. His work includes a 2021 NSF-funded XR training project, an augmented-reality assembly study, a 2022 design method that pairs natural-language processing with generative adversarial networks, and a 2024 intelligent XR framework. He is Georgia Tech's Gary C. Butler Family Associate Professor, a role he has held since January 2025; he directs SAIL and the Allen-Davidson–Coleman XR Makerspace and coauthored psiUnity, an open-source platform for multimodal XR data, in November 2025.

Timeline

  1. 2009–2018

    Tehran degrees and Purdue research

He earns a BS in industrial and systems engineering at the University of Tehran in 2009 and an MS in industrial engineering there in 2012, then completes a PhD in industrial engineering at Purdue University in 2016. From 2012 to 2016, he works as a researcher at Purdue's Center for Production, Robotics, and Integration Software for Manufacturing and Management; from 2016 to 2018, he is a postdoctoral associate with the GE-Purdue Partnership in Research and Innovation in Advanced Manufacturing.

  2. August 2018

    Assistant professor at Northeastern

He joins Northeastern University's Mechanical and Industrial Engineering department as an assistant professor in August 2018, with research interests in smart manufacturing, open systems theory and machine intelligence.

  3. 2021

An NSF award for intelligent XR

In 2021, he receives a $2 million grant from the National Science Foundation's Future of Work at the Human-Technology Frontier program to study how extended reality and artificial intelligence can enhance manufacturing workers' learning and adaptability.

  4. 2021

    An augmented reality assembly study

He coauthors “Exploring augmented reality for worker assistance versus training,” published in Advanced Engineering Informatics in 2021; its HoloLens 2 study with 20 participants performing an electro-mechanical assembly task finds that augmented reality decreases errors compared with traditional instruction.

  5. 2022

    Mavroidis award and Purdue seminar

In 2022, he shares Northeastern's Constantinos Mavroidis Translational Research Faculty Award with Yiannis Levendis. In April 2022, he presents a Purdue seminar on design augmentation: its framework extracts user needs from online reviews with natural-language processing and maps them to visual concepts through generative adversarial networks; the talk also covers AI and extended reality for manufacturing workers.

  6. February 2024

    An intelligent XR framework

At Harvard's Next Level Lab in February 2024, he presents an intelligent XR framework for industrial learning, built on online activity understanding, error detection and prevention, expertise modeling, and content generation.

  7. 2024

Visiting roles and a team award

He serves as a visiting scholar at Harvard's Next Level Lab and as a visiting professor with Politecnico di Milano's HumanTech project, while holding an affiliated faculty role in Northeastern's Khoury College and directing SAIL. He receives Northeastern's Faculty Research Team Award in 2024.

  8. Since January 2025

    Associate professor at Georgia Tech

He joins Georgia Tech in January 2025 as the Gary C. Butler Family Associate Professor, with joint appointments in the H. Milton Stewart School of Industrial and Systems Engineering and the George W. Woodruff School of Mechanical Engineering. In November 2025, he coauthors psiUnity, an open-source C# integration that connects psi's .NET libraries with Unity 2022.3 and MRTK3 for HoloLens 2, enabling synchronized multimodal headset data. By August 2026, he directs SAIL, where his team develops human-centered models, algorithms and tools at the intersection of AI and spatial computing to enhance learning and creativity in industrial settings; he also directs the Allen-Davidson–Coleman XR Makerspace at Georgia Tech.
