Jennifer Dy
Jennifer Dy researches machine learning, feature selection and clustering. She earned her Purdue doctorate in 2001 and joined Northeastern’s faculty in 2002. Her thesis developed FSSEM for feature selection around clustering, with an image-retrieval application. She received an NSF CAREER Award in 2004 and chaired a data-mining conference program in 2013. AAAI elected her a Fellow in 2024. She holds a joint computing and engineering appointment and works in learning and data analysis.

Doctoral research and Northeastern
Dy earned a Purdue electrical-and-computer-engineering doctorate in 2001 and became a Northeastern assistant professor in 2002. Her thesis studied feature selection for unsupervised learning and image retrieval under Carla Brodley and Avi Kak.

Doctoral research
Choosing features for clustering
Her thesis developed FSSEM, a method that selects feature subsets around expectation-maximization clustering. It examines cluster number and biases linked to feature dimension, and describes an interactive version combining visualization and selection. The method also has a medical-image application.

2004–2013
Research support and community work
Dy received an NSF CAREER Award in 2004 and served as a data-mining conference program chair in 2013. Her research interests include statistical pattern recognition and applications to biomedical images, health, science and engineering.

AAAI fellowship and continuing machine learning
AAAI elected Dy a Fellow in 2024. Dy holds a joint computing and engineering professorship and works in machine learning, data mining and computer vision.
