Hanumant Singh

Also known as Hanu Singh

Hanumant Singh is a robotics researcher whose work applies machine learning, mapping and SLAM to autonomous vehicles in difficult field settings. He studied at George Mason, began graduate work at WHOI in 1989, and earned a Ph.D. in ocean engineering through the MIT–WHOI Joint Program in 1995. At WHOI, he worked on the ABE underwater vehicle, developed the SeaBED AUV for imaging, and served as a vehicle developer on a 2007 Arctic expedition; he joined Northeastern in 2016. His 2023 OASIS paper examines sensor placement for SLAM, and he received the IEEE Oceanic Engineering Society’s 2022 Lifetime Achievement Award. As of October 2026, he directs Northeastern’s Institute for Experiential Robotics and Master of Science in Robotics program and collaborates on an NSF-backed seafood initiative that uses AI and robotics.

Timeline

  1. 1989–1995

    Graduate work and ABE

After studying at George Mason University, he begins graduate work at WHOI in 1989 and works on the ABE autonomous underwater vehicle in the early 1990s. He earns a Ph.D. in ocean engineering through the MIT–WHOI Joint Program in 1995.

  2. 2007–2008

    SeaBED and Arctic robotics

In 2007, he serves as a WHOI engineer and vehicle developer on an Arctic seafloor expedition. By 2008, his SeaBED AUV specializes in underwater imaging.

  3. 2016

    Field robotics at Northeastern

In 2016, he joins Northeastern after working on the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution staff. His research applies geometric and machine-learning methods to mapping and SLAM with autonomous aerial, marine and ground vehicles in extreme environments.

  4. 2022

    An OES Lifetime Achievement Award

In 2022, the IEEE Oceanic Engineering Society selects him for its Lifetime Achievement Award, recognizing his work in autonomous marine vehicles.

  5. 2023

    OASIS for SLAM

In 2023, he coauthors OASIS, an information-theoretic approach to choosing sensor arrangements for SLAM. The paper reports lower mean-squared error in synthetic visual-SLAM experiments.

  6. As of October 2026

    Directing Northeastern robotics

At Northeastern, he is a professor of Electrical and Computer Engineering with a joint appointment in Mechanical and Industrial Engineering, Program Director of the Master of Science in Robotics, and Director of the Institute for Experiential Robotics. In July 2026, he collaborates with Taskin Padir on the NSF-backed Seafood Engine, an initiative applying robotics and AI to New England’s seafood industry.
