Milagros Miceli

Milagros Miceli is a sociologist and computer scientist who studies labor conditions in data work. In 2020 she, Martin Schuessler and Tianling Yang published a study of image annotation that reports several weeks of fieldwork at two annotation companies, and in 2022 she and her co-authors asked machine learning research to adopt a power-aware perspective on datasets. She co-initiated the Data Workers' Inquiry, a joint project of DAIR, the Weizenbaum Institute and TU Berlin that began in July 2024. TIME named her to its 2025 TIME100 AI list in the Shapers category, and in June 2026 she received an Award of Distinction at Prix Ars Electronica. As of October 2026, she is research lead at the DAIR Institute and heads a research unit at the Weizenbaum Institute.
