Researcher

Michael Beetz

Michael Beetz is a computer scientist whose AI methods aim to let robots cook, set a table and handle other everyday manipulation tasks. A Yale PhD in 1996 and a Venia Legendi from the University of Bonn in 2000 came first, followed by a role as vice coordinator of the CoTeSys Cluster of Excellence until 2011. The EASE Collaborative Research Center, which Beetz coordinates, started in 2017, and Örebro University awarded an honorary doctorate in 2019. A Tsinghua University ranking placed Beetz fourth in robotics in 2020, EHI Stiftung and GS1 Germany gave their Science Prize in 2021, and the European Research Council granted an Advanced Grant in March 2023 for the FAME project. Beetz is a professor of computer science at the University of Bremen and directs its AICOR Institute for Artificial Intelligence.

Timeline

  1. 1993–2000

Yale doctorate and Bonn Venia Legendi

Yale University awards Michael Beetz an MSc in 1993, an MPhil in 1994 and a PhD in 1996, after a computer science diploma with distinction from the University of Kaiserslautern. The University of Bonn grants the Venia Legendi in 2000.

  2. By 2011

    Vice coordinator of CoTeSys

Until 2011, Beetz serves as vice coordinator of the CoTeSys Cluster of Excellence, short for Cognition for Technical Systems.

  3. Since 2017

    Coordinating the EASE research center

The German collaborative research centre EASE (Everyday Activity Science and Engineering) begins in 2017, with Beetz as coordinator and spokesperson. The center works on improving the technical prerequisites for cooperation in robotics research and on removing obstacles to robot programming. With openEASE, a web-based knowledge service providing robot and human activity data, Beetz aims to improve interoperability in robotics.

  4. 2019

    An honorary doctorate from Örebro

In early February 2019, Örebro University in Sweden awards Beetz an honorary doctorate for achievements in artificial intelligence, machine learning and robotics. The award also recognizes years of cooperation with the university, including lectures at the winter school of the AASS Cognitive Robotic Systems Lab.

  5. 2020

    Fourth in Tsinghua's robotics ranking

In 2020, a Tsinghua University ranking of the 2,000 most influential AI researchers places Beetz fourth in the Robotics category. Beetz is the director of the Institute for Artificial Intelligence and of EASE, a center whose research goal is robots that complete everyday tasks using human competence, for example cooking or setting a table.

  6. 2021

The EHI and GS1 Science Prize

In March 2021, the EHI Stiftung and GS1 Germany award Beetz their Science Prize 2021 for research at the Institute for Artificial Intelligence with high relevance for the retail and consumer goods industry. Knowledge4Retail, a project that Beetz initiates, aims to establish a new generation of information systems for retail and its supply chains.

  7. March 2023

    An ERC grant for FAME

In March 2023, the European Research Council awards Beetz an Advanced Grant of 2.5 million euros for five years. The grant funds FAME, the Future-oriented cognitive Action Modelling Engine, software meant to let a robot interpret videos, written instructions and human actions and plan its own actions.

  8. As of October 2026

    Director of the AICOR Institute

In 2024, the University of Bremen becomes a founding member of Robotics Institute Germany, a step Beetz calls an important milestone for the university. A professor of computer science at Bremen, Beetz directs its AICOR Institute for Artificial Intelligence, which conducts basic research in cognition-enabled robotics for everyday activities.
