Veronika Eyring
Veronika Eyring trained in physics, earning her doctorate at Bremen in 1999. She worked at DLR from 2000 and led climate model evaluation work. From 2017 to 2022 she founded and scientifically supervised a Climate Informatics group. In 2019, she became the corresponding principal investigator for the ERC Synergy project USMILE, which studies Earth system modelling with machine learning. Her work includes ESMValTool and 2024 papers on data-driven climate modelling.

Timeline
-
1999–2000
Physics and climate research
Eyring completed a doctorate in physics at Bremen in 1999, studying Arctic stratospheric chemistry. She worked at DLR from 2000. This physical science background preceded her later work on climate models and their evaluation.
-
2017–2022
Climate informatics
She founded and scientifically supervised the Climate Informatics group at DLR’s Institute for Data Science from 2017 to 2022. This connects climate research with data methods. She helped develop ESMValTool for evaluating Earth system models.
-
2019
Machine learning for the Earth system
Eyring became corresponding principal investigator for the ERC Synergy grant USMILE in 2019. USMILE studies understanding and modelling the Earth system with machine learning.
-
2024
Data-driven climate modelling
Her 2024 publications include work on machine learning for climate modelling and interpretable multiscale parameterisations of convection. Her work also includes causally informed deep learning for climate models. Her work connects physical processes with learned representations and model evaluation.
