Matteo G. A. Paris
Also known as Matteo Paris
Matteo Paris is a quantum-information theorist at the University of Milan whose papers apply machine learning to quantum devices. He earned his doctorate at the University of Pavia in 1995, coauthored a maximum-likelihood paper on estimating the density matrix in 2000, and joined the University of Milan in 2004. In 2021, he coauthored a deep-reinforcement-learning quantum compiler with Lorenzo Moro, Marcello Restelli and Enrico Prati, and a neural-network classifier for single-qubit dephasing channels with Adriano Palmieri, Federico Bianchi and Claudia Benedetti. A 2025 paper with Asghar Ullah and Özgür Müstecaplıoğlu paired a genetic algorithm with a deep neural network to optimize the graph topologies of quantum sensing networks. He is a full professor in the Physics Department of the University of Milan, where he leads the Applied Quantum Mechanics Group and the Quantum Technology Lab.

Timeline
-
1995
A doctorate from Pavia
He receives his doctorate from the University of Pavia in 1995.
-
2000
Maximum-likelihood state estimation
In 2000, he coauthors the Physical Review A paper 'Maximum-likelihood estimation of the density matrix' with Banaszek, D'Ariano and Sacchi.
-
2004
Joining the University of Milan
In 2004, he joins the University of Milan and, with Rehacek, edits the Springer volume Quantum State Estimation (LNP 649).
-
2009
A quantum estimation review
In 2009, he publishes the review 'Quantum estimation for quantum technology'. It presents local quantum estimation theory with explicit formulas for the symmetric logarithmic derivative and the quantum Fisher information of relevant families of quantum states.
-
2021
Quantum compiling by reinforcement learning
In 2021, he coauthors 'Quantum compiling by deep reinforcement learning' in Communications Physics with Lorenzo Moro, Marcello Restelli and Enrico Prati. The method learns a general strategy for approximating single-qubit unitaries as gate sequences, and one training covers every logic gate. He also coauthors a Physical Review A paper with Adriano Palmieri, Federico Bianchi and Claudia Benedetti, in which neural networks classify the environmental parameters of single-qubit dephasing channels.
-
2025
Optimizing quantum sensing networks
In 2025, he coauthors with Asghar Ullah and Özgür Müstecaplıoğlu a paper on quantum sensing networks for estimating weak magnetic fields. A genetic algorithm evolves the graph topologies, and a deep neural network trained on its results extrapolates to larger graphs.

As of October 2026
Leading quantum technology at Milan
He is a full professor in the Physics Department of the University of Milan, where he leads the Applied Quantum Mechanics Group and the Quantum Technology Lab. A theorist working in quantum information, quantum optics and open quantum systems, he focuses on quantum sensing and metrology, continuous variable quantum technology and quantum walks. In February 2024, he gives the InstituteQ colloquium at the University of Helsinki on quantum routing and transport on discrete networks.
