Markus Enzweiler
Markus Enzweiler is a computer vision researcher who works on scene understanding for self-driving cars and intelligent robotics. He earned a computer science PhD at Heidelberg University in 2011, and in 2009 he and Dariu M. Gavrila published a survey of monocular pedestrian detection in IEEE Transactions on Pattern Analysis and Machine Intelligence. From 2010 to 2021 he worked at Daimler / Mercedes-Benz Research & Development in Stuttgart, won the 2012 IEEE ITS Society Best PhD Dissertation Award, and coauthored the Cityscapes dataset paper at CVPR in 2016. Since March 2021, he is a professor at Esslingen University of Applied Sciences, where he founded the Institute for Intelligent Systems in 2023 and directs it.
Timeline
-
2002–2005
Studies in Ulm and Toronto
In 2002 and 2003, he is a visiting student researcher at the Centre for Vision Research at York University in Toronto. He receives his MSc degree in computer science from the University of Ulm in 2005.
-
2006–2011
A doctorate in Heidelberg
From 2006, he works toward a doctorate at the Faculty of Mathematics and Computer Science at Heidelberg University, and he receives the PhD degree in computer science in 2011.
-
2009
A pedestrian detection survey
In 2009, he and Dariu M. Gavrila publish "Monocular Pedestrian Detection: Survey and Experiments" in IEEE Transactions on Pattern Analysis and Machine Intelligence. Their paper surveys the components of a pedestrian detection system and compares four detection systems on data captured onboard a vehicle in an urban environment; they make the 8.5 GB data set public.
-
2010–2021
Perception research at Daimler
From 2010 to 2021, he works at Daimler AG / Mercedes-Benz AG Research & Development in Stuttgart on sensor-based environment perception for driver assistance systems and autonomous driving. His focus is camera- and LiDAR-based scene understanding for self-driving cars.
-
2012–2014
Two IEEE ITS Society awards
In 2012, he receives the IEEE Intelligent Transportation Systems Society Best PhD Dissertation Award, with first prize for his Heidelberg dissertation "Compound Models for Vision-Based Pedestrian Recognition", and the Uni-DAS Research Award. In 2014, he is part of the Daimler team that receives the society's Outstanding Application Award.
-
2016
The Cityscapes dataset
In 2016, he is one of nine authors of the CVPR paper that introduces Cityscapes, a benchmark suite and large-scale dataset for pixel-level and instance-level semantic labeling of urban street scenes. The stereo video sequences come from 50 different cities, and 5000 of the images have high-quality pixel-level annotations.
-
March 2021
Professor at Esslingen
He becomes Professor for Autonomous Mobile Systems at Esslingen University of Applied Sciences in March 2021. His research there focuses on machine learning-based multi-sensor scene understanding and action planning for intelligent robotics.
-
Since 2023
Founding the Institute for Intelligent Systems
He founds and directs the Institute for Intelligent Systems, established in 2023 at Esslingen's Faculty of Computer Science and Engineering. The institute researches and develops algorithms for autonomous systems and artificial intelligence.
