Marius George Linguraru
Marius George Linguraru is a medical-imaging researcher who applies AI to children's health. He earned an MS in computer science and an MA in cultural studies at Sibiu, then completed a DPhil in medical image analysis at Oxford; he studied multimodal brain MRI at INRIA and developed echocardiography algorithms at Harvard. At Children's National, his research applies quantitative imaging and AI to pediatric screening, including smartphone facial analysis for genetic conditions and machine learning to study newborn health risks. He chaired MICCAI 2024 and became a MICCAI Fellow and Society president in 2025. Since 2026, he leads Children's National's Division of AI Research and directs the Pediatric Accelerated Intelligence Lab.
Timeline
-
1996–2003
Degrees in Sibiu and Oxford
He earns an MS in computer science at the University of Sibiu in 1997 and an MA in cultural studies there in 1998, then completes a DPhil in medical image analysis at Oxford in 2003.
-
2003–2005
Expert engineer at INRIA
In January 2003, he moves to southern France as an Expert Engineer in INRIA's Epidaure Research Group. His research analyzes multimodal brain MRI, including Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease, and he remains based at INRIA as a visiting researcher through February 2005.
-
2004–2006
Harvard's Biorobotics postdoc
In October 2004, he joins Harvard University's Biorobotics Laboratory as a postdoctoral fellow. He develops algorithms to segment and track instruments and tissue in echocardiography, and his medical-image analysis fellowship spans 2004–2006.
-
2019–2020
ISBI and SIPAIM chairs
He serves as general chair of the IEEE International Symposium on Biomedical Imaging in Venice in 2019 and co-chairs the virtual SIPAIM meeting in Lima, Peru, in 2020.
-
By 2022
AI for pediatric diagnosis
After studying computer science, he turns to pediatric health research and applies quantitative imaging and AI at Children's National. By 2022, his team's smartphone facial-analysis app screens for genetic conditions, and machine-learning research studies newborns' faces, brains, abdomens and chests to predict health risks. In 2021, a genetic-syndrome screening tool reaches 88% average accuracy.
-
2024
Program chair at MICCAI 2024
In 2024, he serves as Program Chair of MICCAI, which receives and reviews a record number of paper submissions.
-
2025
MICCAI president and fellow
He begins a three-year term as MICCAI Society President on February 1, 2025. In September 2025, MICCAI names him a Fellow for contributions to quantitative imaging biomarkers for pediatric and rare diseases.
-
As of October 2026
Director of AI Research
In 2026, Children's National launches a system-wide Division of AI Research led by Linguraru. He directs the Pediatric Accelerated Intelligence Lab, serves as a principal investigator at the Sheikh Zayed Institute, and holds the Connor Family Professor role in Research and Innovation. He is also a co-founder of PediaMetrix, a company focused on infant well-being through AI solutions.
