Garrett B. Stanley

Also known as G. Stanley

Garrett B. Stanley is a biomedical engineer whose work includes the Sintel optical-flow benchmark and machine learning for real-time cortical-state estimation. The 2012 Sintel paper won ECCV’s Koenderink Prize in 2022, and Stanley became a Fellow of the American Institute for Medical and Biological Engineering in 2015. His career moved from mechanical-engineering degrees at Georgia Tech and Berkeley through neuroscience research at Berkeley and Harvard to biomedical-engineering roles at Georgia Tech and Emory. As of October 2026, he holds the McCamish Foundation Distinguished Chair and directs Parkinson’s disease and neural engineering programs at Georgia Tech and Emory.

Timeline

  1. 1992–1997

    Mechanical engineering degrees

He earns a B.S. in mechanical engineering with highest honors at the Georgia Institute of Technology in 1992, then an M.S. and Ph.D. in mechanical engineering at the University of California at Berkeley in 1995 and 1997.

  2. 1997–1999

    Neuroscience postdoctoral work

He works as a postdoctoral fellow in the Neuroscience Division of UC Berkeley’s Department of Molecular and Cell Biology from 1997 to 1999.

  3. 1999–2007

    Harvard bioengineering faculty

In 1999, he joins Harvard’s Division of Engineering and Applied Sciences and leads the Harvard Biocontrols Laboratory. He is an active member of Harvard–MIT’s Division of Health Sciences and Technology through 2007.

  4. 2008

    Joining Georgia Tech and Emory

He joins the Wallace H. Coulter Department of Biomedical Engineering at Georgia Tech and Emory as an associate professor in 2008.

  5. 2012

    The Sintel optical-flow benchmark

The 2012 ECCV paper “A Naturalistic Open Source Movie for Optical Flow Evaluation” introduces an optical-flow dataset derived from the open-source animated film Sintel. The dataset is designed to test optical-flow methods on long-range motion, motion blur, and non-rigid motion.

  6. 2014–2022

Full professor, AIMBE fellow, Koenderink Prize

In 2014, he becomes a full professor in the Coulter Department of Biomedical Engineering at Georgia Tech and Emory. The American Institute for Medical and Biological Engineering names him a Fellow in 2015. ECCV gives the 2022 Koenderink Prize to the 2012 optical-flow paper he coauthors.

  7. 2024

    Real-time cortical-state estimation

In 2024, he coauthors a Journal of Neural Engineering paper on machine learning for real-time cortical-state estimation.

  8. As of October 2026

    McCamish chair and director roles

As of October 2026, he is the McCamish Foundation Distinguished Chair in the Department of Biomedical Engineering at Georgia Tech and Emory. He directs the McCamish Parkinson’s Disease Innovation Program and co-directs the Georgia Tech/Emory Neural Engineering Center.
