Marc'Aurelio Ranzato
Also known as Marc’Aurelio Ranzato, Marc ' Aurelio Ranzato, Marc' Aurelio Ranzato
Marc'Aurelio Ranzato is an AI researcher whose work spans energy-based unsupervised learning, computer vision, machine translation and continual learning. Originally from Padova, he graduated in electronics engineering, completed a computer science PhD at NYU with Yann LeCun in 2009, and joined Geoffrey Hinton's lab as a postdoc at the University of Toronto. He joined Google Brain in 2011 and Facebook AI Research in 2013, where he coauthored work on large-scale visual features and translation from monolingual corpora. His conference service included ICLR and NeurIPS program chairs, and his 2012 visual-features paper received an ICML Test of Time honorable mention in 2022; in 2025, he coauthored Streaming DiLoCo to reduce bandwidth in distributed language-model training. Since August 2021, he has led continual learning at Google DeepMind in London and is a senior director of research there as of October 2026.

Timeline
-
2004–2009
An NYU PhD and energy-based learning
Originally from Padova, he graduates in electronics engineering and starts a computer science PhD at NYU's Courant Institute with Yann LeCun in 2004, completing it in 2009. In 2007, he coauthors A Unified Energy-Based Framework for Unsupervised Learning, which unites clustering, dimensionality reduction and feature extraction in one energy-based framework.
-
2009
A postdoc in Hinton's lab
After graduating from NYU in 2009, he joins Geoffrey Hinton's lab as a postdoc at the University of Toronto.
-
2011–2012
Google Brain and ImageNet features
He joins Google Brain in 2011 as one of its early members. In 2012, he coauthors Building high-level features using large scale unsupervised learning; the trained network reaches 15.8% accuracy across 20,000 ImageNet object categories.
-
2013–2018
Facebook AI Research and translation
He joins Facebook in 2013 as a founding member of Facebook AI Research. In 2018, he coauthors Phrase-Based & Neural Unsupervised Machine Translation, whose neural and phrase-based models use monolingual corpora and iterative back-translation.
-
2017–2021
ICLR and NeurIPS conference chairs
He serves as ICLR program chair in 2017 and 2018, NeurIPS program chair in 2020, and NeurIPS general chair in 2021.
-
2022
An ICML Test of Time mention
At ICML 2022, his 2012 paper Building high-level features using large scale unsupervised learning receives a Test of Time honorable mention.
-
2025
Streaming DiLoCo
In 2025, he coauthors Streaming DiLoCo with overlapping communication. The method synchronizes parameter subsets in sequence, reducing peak bandwidth for distributed language-model training.
-
As of October 2026
Senior director at Google DeepMind
He joins Google DeepMind in London in August 2021 and leads its continual learning team. As of October 2026, he is a senior director of research there and a member of the NeurIPS Foundation Board.
