Marcel van Gerven
As of October 2026, Marcel van Gerven leads the Artificial Cognitive Systems lab at Radboud’s Donders Institute. He also leads the Nijmegen ELLIS unit and an ICAI lab for semiconductor manufacturing. His research connects artificial and natural intelligence through machine learning and neuromorphic computing. In the 2025 manuscript Neuromorphic Intelligence, he argues for dynamical systems theory as a framework for inference, learning, and control in natural and artificial substrates. The manuscript presents a research framework and its prospects.

As of October 2026
Artificial and natural intelligence
Van Gerven’s research connects artificial and natural intelligence. His methods draw on machine learning and neuromorphic computing. He also researches neural networks at the boundary between AI and neuroscience.
-
As of October 2026
Research coordination in Nijmegen
He leads the Artificial Cognitive Systems lab and the Nijmegen ELLIS unit. He also leads an ICAI lab for semiconductor manufacturing.
-
2025
A framework for neuromorphic AI
His September 2025 manuscript Neuromorphic Intelligence argues that dynamical systems theory can connect several fields involved in brain-inspired computation. It discusses inference, learning, and control in natural and artificial physical systems.
-
2025
Learning through physical dynamics
The manuscript discusses using noise as a resource for learning and differential genetic programming to discover adaptive dynamical systems. It frames intelligent behaviour as emerging from physical dynamics.
