Mamatha Bhat
Mamatha Bhat is a hepatologist and clinician-scientist at Toronto's University Health Network whose research uses clinical and omics data with machine learning to improve long-term outcomes after liver transplantation. After training at McGill University and the Mayo Clinic, her interest in AI began in 2017 during a PhD in medical biophysics. She won the John Charles Polanyi Prize in Physiology/Medicine in 2020, and in 2021 she and Bo Wang were co-senior authors of a Lancet Digital Health deep learning model that predicts complications after liver transplant. She is an Associate Professor of Medicine at the University of Toronto and directs its Department of Medicine's Clinician-Scientist Training Program, a post she has held since December 2021. At UHN's Ajmera Transplant Centre, she co-leads the Transplant AI initiative and is trialing a multi-agentic AI committee for liver transplant candidacy decisions.

Timeline
-
By 2017
McGill, Mayo Clinic and a PhD
She trains as a resident at McGill University, completes a transplant hepatology fellowship at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota under Gregory J. Gores, and takes a PhD in medical biophysics on a CIHR fellowship. Her interest in AI begins in 2017 while she completes the PhD, sparked by JAMA papers on skin cancer and diabetic retinopathy recognition.
-
2020
A Polanyi Prize in medicine
She wins the 2020 John Charles Polanyi Prize in Physiology/Medicine for her research on long-term health after liver transplants. As an assistant professor in the Department of Medicine and a staff hepatologist in UHN's Multi-Organ Transplant Program, she runs a lab on recurrent liver cancer, fatty liver and metabolic disease after transplant. She is establishing the first translational research program worldwide dedicated to improving these outcomes.

By 2021
Neural networks after liver transplant
By 2021, she and Bo Wang build artificial neural network algorithms that predict mortality from the most common complications after liver transplantation, training them on the Scientific Registry of Transplant Recipients and validating them on UHN data. With Anna Goldenberg, she uses a machine learning algorithm to identify modifiable predictors of long-term survival in recipients with diabetes, and the three coauthor the first review of machine learning in hepatology and transplantation.

2021
Deep learning for liver transplant
In April 2021, UHN announces a deep learning model for long-term outcomes after liver transplant, published in Lancet Digital Health, with her and Bo Wang as co-senior authors. Trained on U.S. registry data from more than 42,000 recipients and validated on over 3,200 Ajmera Transplant Centre cases, it predicts complications with more than 80 per cent accuracy at any point after transplant. The American Society of Transplantation gives her its Basic Science Career Development Award in 2021.
-
2022–2025
Three research prizes
She receives the CIHR-INMD-CASL Early Career Researcher prize in 2022, the Department of Medicine's William Goldie Prize in 2024 and the Canadian Society of Transplant Research excellence award in 2025.

As of October 2026
Transplant AI at Ajmera
As of October 2026, she is an Associate Professor of Medicine at the University of Toronto, a hepatologist and clinician-scientist at UHN's Ajmera Transplant Centre, and a Faculty Affiliate of the Vector Institute. She co-leads the centre's Transplant AI initiative, where she is trialing a multi-agentic AI transplant selection committee trained on more than 8,000 cases and now deployed at the Mayo Clinic, UCSF and the National University Health System in Singapore. Since December 2021, she directs the Department of Medicine's Clinician-Scientist Training Program, and she chairs the American Society of Transplant AI Taskforce.
